Default V50 Diesel starting issues. Inlet manifold gaskets

I have been having a few issues starting my 2.0 V50 diesel. On increasingly frequent occasions I had to churn for 10 seconds or more before it would start.

I cleaned the throttle body as per the very helpful S40 article - no luck. I then replaced the throttle body as I noticed a bit of sicking of the flap and this was suggested as a known fix. It now fires almost immediately and dies. The next attempt usually starts it, but if not, a bit of throttle as it spins up will keep it going. Once it has started, it will re-start first go. I can live with this, but it would be nice to have it running from cold first go.

Any offers?

BTW - when I first cleaned the throttle body, I didn't notice how mucky the inlet manifold was. It was caked with about 3mm of crud inside. The inlet manifold had to come off to clean this properly and, used as I am to Volvo dealer prices, I was truly shocked by the 80 odd pounds for 8 rubber rings and one gasket.

I have found the Reinz part number for this 15-36571-01
I couldn't find a price for this on line. If anyone can suggest a supplier it could be a good public service.

I noticed a couple of references to over tightening the clip on other posts, so went carefully with the new throttle body. I did wonder if it might be an injector issue, but not sure if there's an easy test.

I decided to take the V50 to a local diesel and injection specialist, CFT partnership in High Wycombe. They have diagnosed a starter motor problem. It seems the starter is not turning fast enough. Looking under the bonnet when the engine was cranked, smoke was seen coming from the starter.

Cost of Delco starter about £160, investigation and fitting add up to about the same again. I will post an update if this doesn't cure it completely.

I asked about a leak back test while they have the car. It was suggested that this is not something to do lightly on the 2 litre as the Siemens sealing rings often leak afterwards, and fixing this requires the inlet manifold to be removed - which brings us back to the outrageously expensive gaskets!

If I'd seen this post sooner, I'd have suggested a DIY leak off test before doing anything else.
Your starting symptoms were exactly the same as mine. Difficult, escalating to no chance from cold and easy from warm.
An excessively leaking injector stops the fuel rail achieving sufficient pressure to start the car.
The test costs about £5 to do yourself and is very reliable.
If your injectors are similar to my Bosch, then what your garage says about the pitfalls of leak testing is nonsense.
However, I'm unfamiliar with Siemens injectors so can't be certain.
So could you post a close-up pic of your injectors please and I can tell you if the test I did was suitable......

There is a picture on the V50 glow plugs thread:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...24#post1557924

The chap at CFT partnership said that had it been a Bosch system, he would do a leak test but, as it is a Siemens system, he advises against this for the above reasons. I will see how I get on with a new starter motor and report back.

That picture isn't high enough resolution for me to see the tops of the injectors properly, so I can't really help, sorry.

Thanks, Guru. I did spot that one, but I haven't heard of the manufacturer so decided to play safe. I would welcome any first hand knowledge. I have had very good experience with Reinz, but can't find a supplier.
