Default Front End Noise

Wonder if anybody can shed some light on the possible causes of a noise I'm getting from the front end. I've got a 2009 manual and when I accelerate in 1st & 2nd I get a clunking type noise and when turning at slow speed in forward & reverse. I also get a clunking noise when going over rough ground & bumps like something is loose. I've changed the hub bolts because I thought it was axle ping but still got the noise. Changed the pads recently and it's still the same. I've thought about the spring seats or g/box mount. Does this sound plausible?

Cheers
Col.

Sounds a similar type of problem to the noise coming from my car.
Get a grumbling noise with mine.
It's going into Volvo at the start of next week, but will hopefully know more then.

I had similar noises in similar circumstances on my S60.
New drop links and track rod ends didn't sort it but new shocks did.
Jack up your front end, whip a wheel off and check for oil around the shock.
A "light misting of oil" is only an advisory on an mot but if you see any at all, they are way past their best and need changing and forget the bounce test as it's a load of nonsense. My shocks in the pic passed the bounce test.
Unless your car has taken a battering, I doubt it'll be top mounts or spring seat.
You don't state your mileage but mine's done 170000+ and whilst the top mounts were cosmetically tatty, they were sound and the spring seats were like brand new.

Thanks for your replies.

The car has covered 50000 miles. The one thing I noticed was after jacking the front of the car up to do whatever to it, the noise would stop for a while then come back again after a few miles. Almost like something was re-seating itself which made me think about the spring seats.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I am certain my motor needs the shocks replacing all round. My local stealers quoted me in the region of £1200 + VAT to supply only.

Have found these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Volvo-X...16e9#vi-ilComp

Any opinions welcome

Mike

Dont forget the rear self leveling dampers are approx £400 +vat each from the dealers (cheaper to buy the self level upgrade kit ... it about 50% of the cost.) .... even so £1200 +vat is a bit steep .... re Monroe ... not a fan personally, but Bilstein, Koni and Boge all do excellent dampers for the front at not much more ... just my opinion, hope it helps

Maybe something like:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=171165420946

Can the self levelling rear shocks be replaced with a non self levelling variant?

Mike

Yes you can replace the self levelling kit with std, but you also need to change the springs as well.

Honestly, get a price for the self leveling upgrade kit from Volvo in includes the self levelling shocks and new springs, total refresh and keeps the car original.

Sure the part number is 8685627 ... best dbl check
