Don't worry, it might never happen!

My core plug (MY04) popped a couple of yrs ago at about 150,000 miles. Made a lot of mess. Cost about £800 to have it fixed (replaced with the metal one) as they have to drop the engine and gearbox out and separate to get to the core plug.

Shouldn't make any difference if a tow bar has been fitted tbh, the original part was steel surrounded by rubber, for I presume, ease of fitting on the production line. What happens with them is the rubber deteriorates and allows the metal part to either "spin" or fall out, allowing the oil out. It's not under pressure from the pump, merely an access drilling for when the blocks are produced. The replacement part is all metal, and as such won't suffer from the problem.
How the car has been used/driven shouldn't have much, if any effect on this particular part failure. Mike |

Agreed with the above. And for the record no there was no towbar ever fitted and a very well looked after car.

Mine twisted around when I topped the oil up.
I didn't overfill it but it seems quite common after a service. Eventually got round to dropping the engine and the core plug was just sitting in the hole with no friction holding it at all. |
