Not sure if it's been covered, did do a search. Towing with my V70 D5 205 geartronic for the first time, I wonder what is best, drive or semi auto. I guess the semi auto is best for downhill, engine breaking etc, maybe a combination of both, what's the experience out there.

I tend to put mine into drive and forget about it.

However, I do very occasionally flip it over into manual and drop a gear or two when going down any long steep hills.

The geartronic is fantastic for towing - enjoy.

On a XC60 so not same car, but found drive was just a bit keen to hold onto too high a gear a bit too long so slipped it into Sport which drops a cog (or two if accelerating) and all was well with 6th gear effectively locked out

A V70 or V60 may have lower ratios so not same issue of course

Slipping into sport does indeed give better engine braking as mentioned

I found, as previously posted, that a combination of auto and semi was best. Auto on the flat, but semi for the hilly stuff, especially downhill. Also i had to maneuver the van off the pitch which meant the v70 front wheels were on gravel, auto gave a lot of spin, semi gear 2 worked without spin. i note these boxes dont have a winter mode or L like the older boxes, suppose these functions are covered by the manual selection of the relevant gear.
