Default Cruise Control doesn't work

Recently bought a v40, phase 2, 2004 model.

It has cruise control on the indicator stalk but it doesn't appear to work.

Is there something I'm missing?

I haven't checked anything yet, so any pointers appreciated.

Cheers.

On mine you have to set the cruise control to 'on' using the sliding switch on the stalk so that you get 'cruise' showing on the display. Then its just case of clicking the rocker switch on the end.
There are switches to disable it on the clutch and brake pedal so these need to be working and correctly adjusted.

I don't know what engine you have but on the diesel the accelerator pedal is all electric (as is the cruise) whereas on the petrol I believe there are cables and vacuum wizardry involved.

It's the 1.9 diesel alright, I turn on the cruise control using the method above but don't get 'cruise' on the dash, maybe a fuse is gone, I'll have to check.

Anything else worth checking?

Do you have Electronic Climate Control (wind speed and direction turn knobs have "AUTO" selection on them)? I ask because most of the 1.9D models that I've seen with Cruise Control fitted at the factory also had the ECC.

If you don't have ECC then I would suspect the original indicator stalk was non-cruise control and, as the stalks are known to fail, someone replaced it with a Cruise Control one.

Good point there Baffler. However, even if you fit a CC stalk on a non cruise car, if you turn the switch to on, you will get the CRUISE word on the instrument cluster. I did this on my car, before I retrofitted the CC and the CRUISE word was displayed, but the CC was not working until I replaced the entire lockset. And then I also converted the car to climate control, so Cruise Control and Climate Control were both fitted....

Check the fuse first (if there is one). If not, try spraying a bit of electrical contact cleaner to the stalk switch and see if that makes any difference. If not, then a replacement stalk would be a good start. Pitty, as as could have put that in the box for you, but it is already on its way to you....

On our cars, no cruise is a classic sign of the clutch position sensor not working.
It's a plunger style variable resistor attached to the pedal assembly so maybe worth a look to see if yours has the same.

I was also going to suggest that he checks the adjustment of the cut-off switches' plungers, until I read the post where he said that the CRUISE word does not come up on the instrument panel.

The lack of cruise being displayed is what happens on ours too.
Do you have a similar pedal sensor?

On our cars, it is a bit different. When you move the CC switch to ON, the word CRUISE (or the CRUISE icon in earlier pre 2003 models) appears on the instrument cluster. The cut off switch has no effect to that at all. So even if you unplug or adjust or even remove the cut off switch, the word CRUISE always stays on. It is actually always displayed, indicating that cruise is ready to be engaged. Hope it makes sense. Here is what our cut off switch looks like

A quick way to tell if your car has CC installed or not is to remove the steering wheel trim/housing...if the wiring for the CC (small white plug) is taped onto the main harness you don't have CC.
