Default Yet Another Oil Leak Thread

Happy New Year Everyone

Just noticed a pool of oil underneath MY2003 D5

have done a few trips over the xmas period of about 600 miles, some big motorway miles as the 90 only normally does little trips.

had it running for about 20 minutes today on the drive with the engine on as I messed around with VIDA to sort out a SRS air bag warning.

came out this evening and noticed a small pool of oil underneath her

looks like it has been leaking for sometime as the underneath engine cover was pretty soaked and you could see the 'trail' left under the car towards the rear. checked the dipstick and levels look OK (but will get some oil tomorrow to top up)

I've attached a few photos if anyone can clarify what it might be, I'm guessing the dreaded core plug?

I've given it a good clean up and will reassess the leak in the morning. question is how safe is it to drive as I need to get back home from my folks and its a 90 mile drive until I can get I booked in at my local Volvo indy.

I'm assuming you've had a sniff and closer look and it's definitely engine oil not gearbox fluid?

I've never seen the aftermath of a core plug/bung popping but I gather the leak can be quite rapid. Could also be the crank seal but in either case it's a major surgery I think. If you don't need to remove the gearbox for any other reason, quickest way is probably to lift the engine out.

how did you know my AWD didnt work

yes, got the RAC coming over to have a look, hoping to get it recovered back home to Leeds and take it to my local garage.

was quoted circa 1k for getting the AWD done as few years back. if its got to have new seals and replacement core plug I guess its worth doing the AWD at the same time then?

i wonder how much this little lot will cost.

I love this car to much to see it go to the breakers

If its going into the garage for open heart surgery what else do you chaps recommend gets done whilst its in there?

That's a shame... as has been said do the crank oil seal, core plug and probably the gearbox input seal. The seals are £14 each I think for the genuine ones, if you need the AWD sleeve replacing then there should be a significant efficiency saving doing all jobs together. The AWD sleeve I think is about £120.

Not sure if it would be quicker to remove the engine to do the seals or the gearbox - if you do the sleeve as well? Might be easier to drop the subframe complete and then separate them.

P&R have had a few positive comments on here recently as Volvo specialist but I saw their workshop on the news the other week under a good few feet of water....

If AWD has been bust for years then your angle gear will likely also be stripped. That will need replacing along with the sleeve.

just been reading this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=145570

and was wondering if my oil was overfilled on the last service (seems a common problem). it was done at the end of June at 138,094 (by a different garage than usual) and I've only done 2k in the last 6 months, this xmas was 900 of them

It Definately looks like mine did when the core plug went a few weeks ago. I had both a the plug and the main seal done at the same time.
