Default Fuel Filter Change C30 Diesel?

On age and mileage need to change the fuel filter on 2011 C30 1.6 D2 (115bhp).

Is it under the rear, near the fuel tank? And is it a paper filter that goes in a metal unit or a complete metal unit? I think from Googling it looks like pic?
Is it a reasonably starightforward DIY job - no ramp available.

Under the bonnet to the right of the engine so no ramp needed.
To bleed the system afterwards, you need to remove the return feed to the left of the engine and crank the engine for 10 seconds max until fuel flows out.
I prefer to use a vacuum pump.

It's definitely diy...... but then again, isn't everything with the right tools.

As the piping was clear I could see the air bubbles coming through so stopped pumping once all the bubbles stopped.

Put the pipe back on, put keys in and to position II a few times, then fired her up. She started but only for a few seconds then cut out..... Gutted....
Tried again with key to position II, back and forth/on and off, tried to start again and she wouldn't start...

Thought "what the hell is up here, if I carry on I'll flatten the battery"....

Then had another thought... "bet there isn't enough fuel in that pipe [filter -> fuel pump]

FFilterchange_11 by Pete, on Flickr

Used the diesel that I had pumped through the filter into the jug to fill the above pipe up a bit.

Back to position II a couple of more times, position III...... she's alive!!! Fired up straight away.
The starting issue you had is why you prime from the return to the left of the engine instead.

Using that method, it will start immediately and continue to run every time.

Yes, that is correct as I found out at a later date.

The yellow circled connection supposedly

To be honest, you can take away specifics because it's not a Volvo thing.
It's the same principle on any diesel without an in tank pump in that you bleed whichever is the single return back to the tank post engine so it's just a case of following pipework from the injector returns to the point they become one.

Your original method primes only the filter so air can develop in the rail, injectors and injector return lines hence the starting issue.
Bleeding post engine drags through and expels all air from the filter, rail and injectors resulting in a first time start.

So you would disconnect the fitting circled in yellow and bleed the system through that? Excellent write up by the way

Also if you were to bleed through the circled fitting what size hose would you need to go inside the fitting? I have 8 and 10mm.

I'm assuming when you pull the pipe/hose off, it will have an end like the ones on the filter.

I used a 10mm pipe to attach to the filter so hopefully it'll be the same size there.

Thanks Petey, excellent write up and pictures. It looked too complicated but with your advice, will now have a go.

Had a result yesterday on filter parts from a main dealer.

Rang the main dealer I normally use to find out prices for the fuel filter and air filter. Parts were busy. So I rang a different one about the same distance away.

Guy said if I bought 3 of the four filters he could give me a special promotional 'trade' deal of 40% off, for a limited time only. I said do you mean one four, fourteen or four zero forty as I thought I'd misheard. No four zero forty.

Bit his arm off and bought genuine Volvo air, fuel and oil from a main dealer for £53.14.
The price for the fuel filter alone that I was getting from factors was £40+.
