This is just Adam theory, but I would recommend using something like Millers Pistoneeze (SAE30 or 25/50) because modern engine oils contain detergents and surfactants which "swell" particles so that they get caught in a good quality oil filter. There's no oil filter down there in the gearbox, so these "swollen" particles go round and round and round. That's for M41, BTW.

Hi, I don’t think that for the 120 or 1800 series ATF was ever specified. Later models may have ATF specified however.
Lots of discussion on the various forums. Some general comments based on my reading the various forums and some owner/service manuals. M40 can use engine oil, either 30W or 20W40, or 20w50, since I haven’t seen 20w40 for some time. Some early manuals specified 30W non-detergent oil. There appears to be no information as to why non-detergent makes a difference. (Although I see Swedishhangermans comment posted earlier today). M40 can also use NON-HYPOID gearoil 80w90 or similar. Extremes of temperature can dictate a lighter or heavier gear oil. Another option is Redline MTL, which is specified by redline for m40/41 and is supposed to be superior to others for easier shifting etc. I’ll be trying MTL on my next trans oil change. Edit: I see Ron has provided (while I was composing) one of those discussions. |

Per the green book, SAE80 without overdrive, SAE30 with.
For the SAE30 there is also a parameter "Quality" specified with the value "For Service". I don't know what that means. For the SAE80 only the viscosity is specified. The "non-detergent" requirement is for SAE30 in overdrive boxes, to stop it foaming and squirting out of the breather. This also happens if you overfill it. You know it's happened because it squirts onto the exhaust pipe and you can't see anything in the mirror any more. I thought I'd gone to an MZ forum by mistake for a moment! This is a common point of discussion for MZ owners because it makes a big difference to the gearchange and nothing is really satisfactory so everyone has their preference. But the book spec works fine for an Amazon so it never occurred to me that anyone would not just follow it. |
