External Amazon (122S)Hood Release
Would anyone know how to rig the Amazon hood release so it can be easily activated outside the car. My car is a 66 and am getting squeamish about the reliability of the inside cable release. I seam to have read that in the past the race cars had a device which would work. Thanks, Russ

Hi,
Ensure you have a suitable small screwdriver in the boot. Remove either of the front alloy grilles, the arm operated by the cable can then be pulled or pushed to release the bonnet. Your pull cable will benefit by removing the inner cable from the outer, lubricate with grease and replace. |

Russ;
It's cold in CT also, but I prefer working in cold compared to steaming hot...you can always put on another layer (and there's no mosquitoes!), but you can only take off so many layers before the neighbors start to complain... +1 to V133's suggestion...remove the (solid, not stranded like Clutch Cable) inner cable of the Hood release, inspect weak spots due to rust, but otherwise, I'd lube with grease (graphite filled preferred!) and reinstall (lube latch mechanism too!...worse comes to worse and it breaks (unlikely once lubed) remove grill and access Latch from below. Greets from a balmy Connecticut (its in the 20's!)! |

I made a very simple ring-pull from a piece of wire. It attaches to the lever of the release catch at the same point as the release cable (which remains in place). Wind the end of the wire a few times around the lever so that the ring-pull doesn’t flop around. The ring of the ring-pull sits unobtrusively behind the grill and I can reach it with my finger through the grill. No need therefore to remove the grill.
I have the late model Amazon grill. Possibly it may not work with the type of grill you have. I find it very useful to have. Hardly ever use the inside pull any more. |

Or just install a new hood pull and have peace of mind it’s in A1 condition fit for use
Kind regards Robert.w

+1... although I had long dreaded the task when installing new kick panels, I was amazed how simple it was to remove and reinstall the release cable; glad I didn't give in to the urge to cut my new panel for the perceived simplicity.

Make sure the spring plunger and the lock plate is adjusted correctly and is well lubricated after you have lubed the cable. Minor adjustments can make for major improvements.
