Check to see if the blower is receiving power, if it is then suspect brushes in the blower. If it isn't receiving power check out the dash switch. If the switch is ok and the blower isn't receiving power (and the fuses are ok) then suspect broken wire or dodgy connection.
When you are sure of which component is faulty track down a replacement at the scrappy. Cheers |

heater blower
we have just bought a v40 and got same problem. We went back to garage and they tracked it to a regulator - a small metal box, behind the panel in the passenger footwell, under the glove box, next to the fan motor. This regulates the speed settings to the motor from the switch - and was regulating nothing, so no blower was working - they have a new one on order for us.

The item in the passenger footwell is also known as a resistor unit and it seems they do fail eventually.
Mine went at 70000 miles and for once I was pleasantly surprised by the price of the repair at my Volvo dealer. 23 pounds for the part and half an hour's labour to fit it. Came to just under 40 pounds total. |

It could be, the item is just a varible resistor to regulate the speed of the fan motor. Normally they are in the engine bay cos they get real hot. Well that where it was on my transit where i had a loose connection.
I certainly would not pay anyone else to do it cos its easy to get to.

Common fault is the resistor pack under the passenger side footwell panel, its small like you say, im trying to find a pic for another forum member too, dont confuse it with the ultrasonic control pack thats fitted under there too. it screw into the heater casing and has a silver heat sink on it.
Like i say its a common problem, good luck fixing it. |

Blower motor fails to run - fault finding guide S40 1998
I've had a fault on my fan too, on a 1998 S40 - suggest the following which should get to the root of the problem with least effort and expense.
First check the fuses in the passenger fusebox F1 and F12. If the motor fails to run at any speed switch setting: Check for power to the blower motor. To do this remove the trim under the glove box in the passenger footwell. The motor has a connector, disconnect this and using a multimeter check for voltage to the motor - try the blower speed selector switch through all positions. Check the resistance of the motor, should be low - less than an ohm. If the motor brushes have failed it will be high or open circuit. If there is no power to the motor and the resistance is low suspect the heater blower relay. To change out the relay, remove the fascia below the steering wheel. Above the fuse box there is the flasher unit for the indicators, above that again are two relays, both black and about an inch square. The heater blower relay is the one on the left. The other is for the rear window heater and wing mirror heaters. My relays are identical so I swapped them over to check if that was the fault - make sure both have identical part numbers before doing this. There are two other small black relays in that area, nearer to the steering column – leave these alone. If that doesn't work or if you have power to the motor already, or motor only runs at certain speed switch settings then suspect the heater blower resistor unit. This is a common cause of the blower motor not working. It is located near the motor under the glove box. My trips are to bend the metal support slightly to enable the old unit to be moved/new one fitted. A new resistor unit cost me £36 from a Volvo dealer (late 2007 price). The upper securing screw is hard to get to. I used a star drive screwdriver bit with a small spanner to turn it. Small hands are an advantage here. Failing that, remove the motor, check it is free to turn. Last resort check the heater blower switch using a multimeter on the connector to the heater blower resistor. Fortunately I resolved my problem prior to this so don't have expected readings for the test or tips for replacing the switch. Perhaps someone else who has done this could complete the story? Failing all that the only other remaining fault would be a cable fault. Hope people find this usefull - good luck. |
