What is this on V90

I owned a 1998 V90 3ltr (wish I still had it) it had a motor with a pipe to atmosphere and a pipe going to the engine, Earlier engines did not have this fitted, I always wondered what it was called and what it did.
I assumed it was a pump to do with crank case pressure/emission control but only guessing, can anyone enlighten me, what it did how it worked what it was called.

It is a air blower to heat the cat

Thanks, any idea how this works,

Edit: looking at other photos I have it looks like it is blowing into the exhaust manifold, if so that makes sense. I thought it was going to the top of the cylinder head.

Correct it blows extra air into the exhaust
