Parkers and Wisebuyers guide poles apart!

Hi all,

I have just bought a 2004 (54 plate) S80 2.5T SE (petrol) with 27000 miles.

I have paid £11400 and was really pleased as Parkers price guide said it was £12400 book price.

However, loking at wisebuyers.co.uk. they say it is £9300 retail!

I am really worried.

I have tried Glass's eb site, but that won't give me a valuation on this model?

Can anyone help please?

At the end of the day they're exactly what you say they are - guide prices. Prices vary across the country and between sellers. Dealers tend to charge more than indies, affluent areas will always have an extra mark up. Prices vary with mileage, spec and extras. Colours can dictate price too, but that's not refected in the guides.
The only thing you need really concern yourself with is are you happy with your car? Do you feel you have got value for money?
If you've paid over the odds then you won't have any comeback against anyone. You'll just have to bite the bullet and learn the lesson. On the flip side, the wisebuyers guide may be wrong.

like Tim has mentioned it's only a guide! and half the time not worth any more than a fire lighter.

When your looking for a motor a guide price is meaningless if all the cars are priced £2k higher,obviously if you have paid £11400 and theres bucket loads at £9500 then" oops" or you got something special for the extra!.I think we've all paid over the odds at one time or other.

But i really hope you like your new car!

Yeah, I had exactly the same when I bought my S60, Parkers valued it at nearly £14K and Wisebuyer at £10500, likewise I had only looked at Parkers when I made the purchase and thought I had got a steal but later found out that the wisebuyer price was far more accurate.

Only seems to be on Volvos though as several colleagues have checked thier lesser brands; BMW, Merc, Ferrari, Aston Martins (well Fords and VWs anyway) and found Parkers to be far more accurate.

Agreed, it is only a guide, but this is well off!

Perhaps Parkers are trying to do us a favour by artificially inflating the price of used Volvos!

I've always found Parkers to be quite optomistic in it's prices, never used wisebuyers so can't really say.

Have a look in autotrader and see what cars in your area are on sale for, I've always found that's the best way. I had a quick look and there are only 4 for sale in the whole country. That's probably why you can't get a glass valution and why the guides vary so much, they always struggle on cars which aren't that common as they have little data to go on.

Bells in Northampton have an '04 with 56k on the clock up for £13k and Hartwell in Kidlington have an '03 with 37k for £10k so sounds like you have got a pretty reasonable deal there.

Well, I have got the car home and a warning light has come on!

It is the one that says emissions is a problem (lookis like a rectangle with uneven sides!)

The garage say that it has been serviced, MOT'd yesterday and that the Volvo delaer will reset it as it is just a computer issue.

The info messaging also says needs servicing - they say that this is same issue.

I have bought it from non volvo dealer.

Is the emmisions warning light likely to be a computer issue only please?

Rubbish!

The system has detected an out of range reading from a sensor somewhere and has put the light on as a result. It might never come back if it's reset but it's quite likely that it will. Is the message "Emission system service required" as that just means there is a fault not that the car needs a scheduled service.

It needs the fault codes read to find out what the problem is and then a compentent garage can give you a view as to what needs to be done.

Some garages will tell you it just needs to be reset because it might take weeks or months to come back on again and then they can wash their hands of the whole thing. Sounds like they are just trying it on.

I would go back to them and tell them you want the fault codes read to find out what the problem is and it fixing. See what they say, if they try to wheedle their way out of it don't let them. If they say they will fix it demand an itemised list of work done.

The flasing engine icon means emmision service issue (according to the manual)

There is a second and seperate message in the trip computer bit, it says engine service required.

Tries resetting that with the method stated on here, but nothing happens.

after holding in the odometer, the exclamation warning light in middle flashes, I release the odometer and there is a bleep. However, the "serive engine serive required" mesage remains.
