V70 Auto Dip rear view mirror
Hi i have an 2000 V70 2.4t SE which has an auto dip rear view mirror that seems not to be working. I drove the car this weekend late at night and the rear view mirror had the same level of reflection/glare as the side mirrors. I have had other cars namely VW's with auto dip mirrors and the glare has always been vastly reduced compared the the side mirrors. Has anyone any thoughts?
thanks |

They have an LCD film behind the glass that performs the dimming. This tends to 'leak' away - mine has lost about 1/5 of the LCD at the edge.
A new replacement mirror is very expensive, as it houses the upper electronic module as well as being a mirror (and hence is coded to the vehicle). It may however be possible to get a unit from another vehicle and replace just the glass/LCD element at the front and leave the electronics in place - at least that is my plan for the future.

Rear View Mirror LCD Replacement
Hi there, my 2000 V70 has just seen the LCD begin to "leak" away. As you point out it is expensive to replace the whole unit. You mention about replacing the LCD/Glass unit, I wondered if you have done this yet and can explain to me how to do it and what the costs were. Or is there anyone else out there with a similar experience.
Many thanks |

I've had mine for a few seasons and, as the nights draw in in September, I swear it'd stopped working, then the dealer disagrees. By mid-winter I've got used to it and all seems fine. I've recently found out that the degree of dimming is software configurable (by dealer), and I'm sure that's my problem. I'll put it to the test when the nights start drawing in again.
The mirror has two sensors, one forward facing - you can see it through the windscreen that detects daylight, which effectively disables the dim in daylight. The other sensor is on the lower edge, facing out the back window, to pick up headlights. It's easiest to test in daylight. Park the car outside so there's daylight on both sensors then, with engine running, hold you palm tightly over the forward facing sensor, and the mirror should dim, though it can take a long time for the forward sensor to react (up to a minute or two). The rear facing sensor reacts much faster, of course. If the LCD was leaking I think it wouldn't dim, or it would just dim in patches. - Bill |

Do the non-dimming mirrors have places where these sensors would be? My S60 was advertised as having the auto-dimming thing but I've never seen it work. I'd like to figure out if it really does.

The auto-dim is easy to test, as per my previous post.
I don't have a non-dimming mirror for comparison, but I'd have thought the major difference with non-dimming mirrors would be the manual dimming button/lever. If you have a manual dimming button/lever, then it's not an auto-dim mirror. With auto-dim there is no manual lever, and that's half the problem... if the auto-dim fails to work you get dazzled and nothing you can do about it except close your eyes, which you might regret a moment later.... |
