Default HU-655 - no radio reception

I have a HU-655 in an early 2004 S40 Sport which is no longer picking up any radio signals. The CD player and cassette player are working fine.

I have removed the unit, disconnected all the cables and reconnected them but this made no difference.

The aerial sounds a bit clunky at the point at which it has extended fully and also when it has retracted.

I also tried a Griffin iTrip on an iPod and couldn't get any connection to the unit.

So, it looks like signal reception is the problem.

I don't want to spend too much on trying to sort this out so what's my best bet for isolating and solving the problem i.e.

1. How can I tell whether it's the aerial or the HU-655 where the problem lies?

2. If aerial, any advice on replacement? Had a look and it's not the easiest location to get at.

3. If unit itself, any advice on replacement?

Thanks.

I had a similar problem on my hu-655, after taking the radio out i found that the connector on the end of the aerial cable was only party attached as i like listening to my radio i did a bodge with a random bit of cable and some insulating tape which has lasted well for a couple of months until a friend tried removing my radio to see what was behind it.... i wasn't happy!! I'm now hoping to get down to a breakers yard to find a proper connector and then chop 6" or so cable off and splice together.

So try taking the unit out, 2 small clips you push in either side, they pop out, give them a gentle pull and the unit should slide out and inspect the aerial connection.

Oh, and by anchance does anyone have a connector for sale???

To check if is aerial related you can try the following;

remove the aerial cable from the unit.
put a small screwdirver in the aerial socket touching the centre pin
make sure that your finger is touching the part of the screwdriver that is making contact with the centre pin. (you act as an aerial.)

if you get sound from the radio perform a search it should stop on a local station. if it does your aerial is ok.

if no luck you can send the unit to
CENTRAL SERVICES (IPSWICH)
188 SPRING ROAD
IPSEICH
SUFFOLK

we will check the unit

Thanks phil r and Marcel for your replies.

After further investigation, which incorporated your suggestions, it looks like the HU-655 is the problem i.e. its capability of playing a radio signal.

I am now looking at getting a replacement radio/CD unit .

It looks like I will need a PC2-71-4 Harness Adapter and PC5-89 Antenna Adapter for any new radio I purchase.

However, before I commit to buying, I want to be fully sure that the radio I purchase will be compatible with the above adapters. I'm also assuming that I do not necessarily need the fascia adapter.

I am also looking for a radio/CD player with bluetooth functionality for connecting to my mobile phone.

So, I would be grateful if you could recommend a unit which is compatible with the above adapters, has bluetooth and which can be installed without professional help.

Many thanks.
