Default Pollen/multi filter location? (Phase 1)

Ok...I'm stumped. I've tried as many places as I can think of and I can't find a pollen/multi filter in either my 1998 S40, with manual air-con, or the V40, with Electronic Climate Control. Both units are identical to this shot:

Anyone wish to enlighten me...?

Both cars don't have a cabin filter? Strange...

There was a debate a while ago I got into with Clan over if cars with ECC before 2000 had a multifilter. Vadis shows they do but Clan said Vadis was wrong. If they both look like your pic then they don't have the multifilter and Clan was right.

Heres the Vadis pic

Cheers Dandle, I had seen that. There is also more info under 'Fan unit RHD' in 'Climate units' and it appears that '96 to '00 air-con units don't have a filter option where as cars without air-con units have the filter. The filter is only added to the air-con unit after '00. See here

So what filters the air in the phase 1? Is there something under the scuttle panel?

No, I never found a filter. I had to remove the dashboard to replace the heater matrix/core and there was nothing. The air-con condenser is located in the centre of the climate unit and I dread to think what kind of debris are at the heater blower side of the condenser.

If there is a filter fitted you should see a clip where I've marked the two red lines:

What symptoms did you have for failing core?
Reason i ask is so that i can start to look out for it.

On a seperate note, i was planning on removing front windshield cover, then hoovering up any debris underneath at intake for aircon. Would that get rid of all the debris, or could there be a load more debris elsewhere?

Hi Baffler

How long did it took you to remove the dashboard to get to the heater matrix?

I was driving along the motorway and after overtaking another car I starting to see a lot of condensation on the windscreen. From then on it just got worse and within a day or two it was virtually impossible to drive the car.

I reckon there will be a lot more debris will have got past the blower fan and, if your car has air-con, will be sitting against the condenser rad.

I knew when I was doing this I should of had the camera out so I could, at a later stage, write up a "How To" but it was just before Christmas and daylight was not on my side.

My first attempt took the best part of 2.5 hours. A certain 'Book Of Truths' told me to dismantle certain parts of the dash that weren't really necessary, such as the airbag and steering wheel, which as it turns out, can be dropped sufficiently by removing the two upper column bolts.

I also made a fatal mistake by buying a Mitsubishi Carisma heater matrix which turned out to be too thick and the holes for the pipes were slightly off line with the Volvo matrix. So, as I needed the car, I had to refit the dash with the old matrix, go fetch a Volvo matrix and then take out the dash a day or two later. The second time around I had it out in well under an hour.

Removing the dashboard is the easy bit, it's trying to split the climate unit is the difficult part and needs plenty of persuasion. If you have air-con it makes it more difficult as you need to loosen to complete climate unit from its mounts and there's a danger of disturbing the air-con tubing.

Gracias for that.

I'll clean under the windshield cover and take off the blower fan (it's on the left side of the underside of your dash in the first picture of this thread).

See the attached file for more details.

This should give me access to the blower motor, and, I'm assuming, just about the entrance to the heater matrix.
