Default Oil and Filters

I intend to change the oil and filters on my 06 plate 2.0 diesel, that is air, fuel and of course oil, this weekend. Do I need any special tools or is there anything I should be aware of? I assume the oil filter will be obvious once I remove the under-tray and accessible, the air filter is and I am going KN with that. However, struggling to find a fuel filter. Where is it located, as not obvious in the engine bay. Any other basic maintenance I should do while I am at it?
Cheers
Andy

I'm afraid not, the oil filter is accessible from the top of the engine, on your 06 you'll have to remove the Y shaped pipe going to the manifold, and the green plastic sensor in it to gain access. Then you'll need a 27mm key to undo the oil filter compartment lid, the filter is a cartridge inside a black plastic cup, the lid is a 27mm hexagon.

The engine does not self bleed, so after changing the fuel filter you'll need a special tool "a Volvo hand pump" to prime and bleed air out of the fuel system, otherwise, the car will not start!

Changing the air filter is pretty straight forward, a couple of torx screws and that's it.

Hi thanks for the advice, evidentally not as straight forward as I thought. The car has a FSH but I like to start from a "base-line" with any car I buy, hence the reason to do oil/filters. I reckon the oil job I can do, but with no volvo pump, fuel filter not an option. As such, how often would you suggest I change the fuel filter? I am at 62 000 at the moment. Incidentally, where is it located?
Regards
Andy

"A" is the fuel filter, replaced every 60,000 km (38,000miles)
"B" is the oil filter compartment, but as I said, yours will not be visible until you dismount the manifold pipe w/sensors

Both oil and fuel filters are in black plastic cups with screwed-on lids.

Guru - from your picture of your engine bay I can see the coolant expansion tank looks a little brown.

Have you also had cast sand turn up in there like I did a while back?

Luckily mine was still under warranty....

Guru, thank you for the picture most helpful. If I changed the fuel filter, would it not self bleed if I kept cranking it over?

No it wouldnt self bleed. When I changed my diesel filter i filled the filter holder up with diesel and then put some into the clear plastic pipe leaving the filter and connected it quickly, the car started ok and ran fine.
The air bubbles quickly cleared from the clear plastic pipe once running

@ ADBS65: Your welcome, and Read This. - LINK -

@ nozmeister: cast sand? so that's what it was? it appeared to me like an emulsion, I thought it was the white grease Volvo likes useing, nevermind now, I flushed the coolant circulation with over 20 liters of distiled water soon after buying the car You see my car was imported from the south of Italy and the coolant didn't have sufficient amounts of anti-freeze in it to withstand proper European winter temps, so I drained it all out, flushed, then refilled to withstand -40C ... better safe than sorry

Guru, thanks for the link, will give this job some thought before I decide if I can tackle it. Regards the oil filter/cartridge, is this only available from Volvo or would a motor factor stock it? Finally, any preferred make of oil, castrol etc

No, the same oil filter is used in so many other cars, and it's not specific to Volvo, so any motor factor should have it in stock.

As for the oil, just make sure it's up to specs. For the 2.0D engine ACEA A1/B1 Ford WSS M2C 913-B oil was first recommended by manufacturer, later on ACEA A5/B5 was pronounced as a better choice.

Personally, I prefer Mobil 1 over Castrol. But I guess you can't go wrong with either once sticking to the specs, so if it's castrol you want then>

- Castrol SLX Professional C1 5W-30.
Other possibilities:
- Motul 8100 Eco-clean 5W-30
- Total Quartz Future 9000 5W-30

I use Mobil 1 Fuel Economy 0W-30.
