Gearbox Fault??
Hi All,
XC70 diesel auto 2004 59,000 miles, fsh, Wonder if you can offer any advice-- Symptoms are as follow's Dash lights/instruments failed but ok after switching off for a while, ABS warining on, Brake failure warning has been on (engine would not start)_Warning on dash (anti skid needs service) Several different warning's have been on and gone, Local garage suggests gearbox is finished and should be replaced, I dont think so and need some help to trace the fault, there does appear to be some common issues with this autobox but if anyone can get me close the the fault !! Effect---- Thump when selecting gear, Occasional slip/high reving when moving off Auto box behaves strangly but is ok at the moment I need to know what the fault might be (tcm, abs) is it safe to drive or? I've been a fan of older Volvo's for many years and have a wide experience of older models. Last edited by sheltie; Aug 12th, 2011 at 00:41. |

Sheltie,
as yours is a 2004 it'll have the D5 (D5244T) Engine in it .. Coupled to an AW 55/50 SN Gearbox, My son has a Laguna V6 (52 Plate) it has the Same Gearbox but Renault call it a SU1 002 Gearbox your description is IDENTICAL to Problems he was having with his Laguna the Fault was finally found to be VERY LOW / Knackered Gearbox Oil .... Have you checked (I suppose you MUST have!!) the Gearbox oil ??? The next step I would do is get it Flushed out ..... IMPORTANT NOTE HERE .. The Gearbox holds approx 3.8 Litres of Oil but the TORQUE CONVERTER ALSO holds 3.6 Litres of Oil Make Sure you change ALL the Oil Simply draining the Gearbox Oil WILL NOT CUT IT !! Make sure you get as much as possible out of the Torque Converter as well .. When you re fill you'll top up to the Correct level BUT the Torque Converter will be Empty / Low take it for a "Small Drive & Check again whilst the engine is still running (You'll find on first Dip the dip stick comes back out DRY!!!) fill it again & take it for ANOTHER RUN ... & keep dipping & Checking everytime you get back until on the FIRST DIP AFTER pulling up the Oil is at the Correct level with My Sons car the Previous owner had had the gearbox "Overhauled" but whoever did the job didn't top up the Torque Converter & Hence we had YOUR classic Symptoms .. Clunk on Engaging Gears & Hugh Revs (sometimes) on moving off,, I personally put 4 Litres of Oil in the box .... but if you check it BEFORE having a Run about it APPEARS TO BE AT THE CORRECT LEVEL (as the Oil only moves into the Torque Converter During driving/ When its actually turning ect ect ....) Keith

Thanks, I have checked the oil level and condition and that's all ok,
It looks like either the TCM or the CEM has a fault, if thats the case I dont think many will have the equipment to make it go again. Shame really as it means a 14Hr trip by sea to get to a main dealer. Any one got a component location diagram as I'm not to sure about these newer thingy's Ba Humbug Last edited by sheltie; Aug 13th, 2011 at 09:44. |

Wasn't there some form of recall or compo on some these auto boxes for valve body failures ? I thought I'd read it somewhere on here recently ?
