Air con dead?
Morning all,
just got my air con re-gassed last week as it was not working, had two days of beautifully cold air getting blasted out of the climate control but now it's back to just blowing warm air or outside temperature air. The system was checked for leaks (allegedly) and was found to be ok so I'm wondering if it's the control unit at fault? Any help greatly appreciated..as always! |

Having owned quite a few that never needed re gassing nor ever having
a conversation with anyone about it, unless I or someone else had fixed their pranged car, I am at odds to come up with the definition of this re gassing Certainly without any re tightening

It seems to be caused by too great an air gap between the clutch plates on the compressor. The extra warm air around the compressor clutch plate also creates increased electrical resistance which prevents the electromagnetic clutch plate from engaging. If you observe your aircon pulley, you'll see the the central part being dead still despite the outer part rotating with the belt. On my D5 (and others) you can test the theory by (very carefully) tapping the centre of the pulley with a stick whilst the engine is running. This will push the plate in and allow it to engage and you'll get ice cold air again. The long term cheap fix is to insert a shim to the plate to force it closer and reduce the air gap or of course fit a replacement compressor (expensive).
