A 240 GLT in the Snowdodgers Rally!
Ian has indeed kindly given us the GLT to attempt the Snowdodgers Rally in! As Ian said, it's a rally covering over 4000 miles across Europe for charity. We leave in April from London and aim for Moldova, going via the Nordic countries and the Arctic circle. There are fifteen teams taking part, and although it's not a race as such and I'm yet to find out what other cars are being used, I think a 240 stands a very good chance of lasting the distance and being first across the line.
The rally is being run to support the ‘Stop the Traffik’ movement, which is a movement to stop human trafficking across the world. The rally’s destination is Moldova which, being the poorest country in Europe, suffers from a lot of human trafficking problems. The primary charity is Children on the Edge, which helps venerable children and young people in poor rural communities who are more at risk of exploitation and abuse due to poverty. We had been keen to do the rally in a Volvo as I have some (ten years now) previous experience of 240s and we wanted an estate to sleep in (where possible, temperature permitting). I think a 240 will make mincemeat of the route, which can be found on the website www.snowdodgers.co.uk. The rally rules state the car must cost less than £200, so I've been keeping a watchful eye on eBay recently. That nice 740 that wouldn't idle stayed well under £100 until the last 24 hours, and finally sold for a shade over the allowed £200 mark today. It's surprisingly hard to find a car for that sort of money, and I'm looking forward to getting this one ready for its eipic voyage. I will start a thread, probably in the Project Volvo section, to keep everybody up to date with progress and events as they unfold... I'm also looking forward to finally driving a GLT as I've only ever owned a 2.1 DL and 2.0 SE in the past. My thanks to Ian for kick starting our campaign! David |

I bought my new 850 today and it is getting dropped off on Saturday, so I will post some pics on the site then. I have told Dave that I am happy to look after the 240 for the moment, untill he is ready to collect it. My new estate has 225000 miles on it and could do with some shiny new rear lights as the ones on the car are faded, but I am happy and glad that we can keep these old cars on the road.

Just in case anybody is interested in doing this, the deadline for entries has just been extended to the end of October!
