C70 2006 Sat Nav Screen Movement Broken
Hello,
I only post when I have problems, so I shall start by saying how much I love my 2006 C70 T5! However, a few months ago my Sat Nav screen stopped lifting up. I can still hear the whirring of the motor when I turn it on or off, but there's no movement. I suspect it's just a clip of some kind which has broken. I went to a Volvo dealer and they said I needed a new screen at around £500. I don't suppose there is a cheaper repair option? I've had a look around and can't find any other threads about this. - Tappy |

I would take it apart and find out where the problem is.

It comes... apart?!
I'm not really sure how to get to it. Seems pretty solid in that area, unless there's some cunning way to remove the speaker grill around it. |

Do they HONESTLY think you'd pay them £500 for just a new screen on an average aging device???? mental! |

Hi
Of course it comes apart, how else did they get it in. I think you will have to remove the cd unit and console and possibly air vents to get to it. I used to have a link to a volvo accessory website that gives you step by step guides to install/remove sat nav. Try this, someone with the same problem:- http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...hlight=sat+nav Last edited by Jonnieb2009; Aug 5th, 2010 at 18:59. Reason: added text |

I think originally it's a £1500 option, and updated maps cost something like £250 a pop. Overpriced is an understatement. But, alas, I'm looking to sell my car at some point, and I can see this as a good excuse for a buyer's discount. |

And the £500 I was quoted seems quite cheap compared to what some people were told. |

I'm in the middle of rectifying the same problem on my 2007 C70. If you get the unit out as above and look inside the right hand side cover in the gearbox there will be part of a white nylon cog broken off. Note this doesn't have teeth all the way around to begin with so it will probably only be 3 or so broken off which will be sitting in the bottom of the casing.
By removing the circlip, spring and washer and undoing the 2 screws on the right hand side I was able to get the broken gear off. Now, where to get another? I already had some ideas and by measuring the remains of the old gear I was able to measure that should it actually be round it would be about 23mm diameter, and measured the teeth pitch to be 3mm. Then calculated Pi x 23 to get the circumference then divide by 3 to find I needed 23mm dia x 24 teeth or thereabouts. I then cannibalised an old CD ROM drive, no luck. Then I found that a defunct HP Photosmart 2575 printer had 2 of these exactly the right size, where the scanner lid hinges up. (I'd say that even if you had to buy a new printer then smash it up it would be worth it given how cheap printers are and how much Volvo want to fix the Sat Nav.) All that remains now is to drill a suitable hole through the middle of the new gear to fit the Sat Nav shaft then cut a couple of slots to fit the locators on the Sat Nav screen. That's as far as I've got for now but I will update on progress. Fingers crossed. |

Fixed!
Very pleased, fitted the HP gear after a few small modifications: drilled a hole (4mm) through the centre then cut a slot in the centre boss with an angle grinder. Removed old broken gear, spring and metal plate from the shaft and discarded. Fitted the new gear, used an old nut as a spacer then the original washer and circlip. Had to cut out part of the gearbox black casing (with angle grinder) to clear the new slightly larger gear. All refitted and tested. The screen now doesn't quite rise to totally vertical anymore but is perfectly useable and unless you had seen it before you wouldn't notice. Basically it is a realistic repair, nobody would want to spend £500+ on replacing it when a £100 stand alone sat nav would be better but by the same token if I was to sell the car I'm sure any buyer would knock me on the strength of the 'nav not working. Cost to me £0 as I already had the skip-fodder printer but looking on eBay seems you can get a HP Photosmart for about £10. Worth a try! |
