Hi there,

This thread is pretty comprehensive in what to look out for: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=108252 Just ignore the guy with the irrational negativity.

On the plus side, they are certainly entertaining-not just if youre moving fast, good on fuel consumption, the engine/gearbox are pretty solid and only really anciliary electronics that go wrong.

If you're looking for a 2.0i leave the first engine generation of MY '93 alone. You can easily identify that engine from the red oildipstick, the good ones have a green oildipstick. The red ones from '93 can burn oil like an old oilboat, 1ltr on 500miles is not uncomon. The 2.0i engines from '94 on are upgraded by Volvo and don't suffer from that fault anymore.

The one I have seen is a '93 do they all suffer this?

All the early-green dipstick-2.0 litres suffered this problem. There was a recall/upgrade done by volvo dealers to deal with it, presumably this included similar modifications to the later 2.0's.

I would leave the red dipstick alone if you're not absolutly sure it had a recall from Volvo to adress the oil use.
Here's a list wih the modefications done on the green dipstick engine:

Changes on B20F 208/209 '94 on(green dipstick) versus 116/118 old B20F (red dipstick '92-'93)
208&116 stands for the manual and 209&118 for the automatic (ZF4 box)
These adaptations were done by Volvo to reduce excessive oil use. Some red dipstick engines are
modified by Volvo under warrenty,so there are some non oil using 116/118 engines around.
New:
Pistons and rings
Camshaft
Crankshaft and Main bearings
Connecting rods
No piston cooling anymore
Inlet manifold
Throttle body with adjusting screw for base settings is left
Oilcapacity 5.7L with filter, 2.2L between max and min, (old version had 5,4ltr)
Green dipstick: 80kw@5200rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,8:1
Red dipstick: 81kw@5500rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,5:1

Although B20F is correct most 480 's come with a red dipstick ! its not a such a great problem some consume more oil than others I have a 92 34k 480 1.7 that hardly uses any of the oil but my daugthers ex used a fair bit but not huge amounts . Personally I would not hesitate in buying a red dip stick 480.

there are more pressing factors to consider when buying a 480 ie rusty arches.

Jim, he is talking about the 2.0i. Only those red dipstick engines suffer from huge oil burning. The 2.0i reddipstick only came in the MY '93 version.
The 1.7i all came with a red oildipstick, those engines don't have the oil problem only the 2.0i did.
