Clutch slave cylinder
Aaaarrggh clutch probs this morning. I think (and AA man also thinks) it's just the slave cylinder - symptoms: no resistance in pedal; then hard or in the end impossible to get in/out of gear. (Happened at the Pear Tree Interchange in rush hour, making me Oxford's least popular driver this morning - fortunately I managed to get it out of there and limp to a safe place before it became completely impossible.)
I haven't time to find out how to do it myself, let alone do it, so car is with trusty independent garage (and I'm in a Mitsubishi Carisma 1.6 GLX!). Just wondered if anyone knew offhand what the likely £££ouch is for this. Also whether I am likely to have done any more damage to anything else by limping out of there.

dont think you will have caused any more problems by limping it clear.
all depends , unfortunatly, on how the slave cyl has failed. if its the line to it , then a new line will be "fairly cheap" + fluid + bleeding if its seals in the unit itself, new seals/new unit + labour to get to/fix, + fluid + bleeding. worse case i could see is a reomtly outside chance of , seals on slave cyl failing, clutch fluid spraying onto clutch plate > new slave cyl, new clutch, fluid + bleeding + labour...but thats total worse case, not really liable imho. cost sorry all depends on the £/hour they charge and what parts it really needs. tis a couple of hours job id say not a full day job

Thank you. I can answer it myself now.
New slave cylinder £72.50 plus one hour's labour. No further harm done. More excellent service from D & A Autos in Witney.

Yep I'm relieved all right.
It's a most disconcerting experience when it fails. Clutch pedal sort of sucked away from under your foot and general loss of control. That and the next thought which is "Oh f%& this is going to cost £hundreds". A cr@p day overall though: took fixed car straight to GP as I have the most appalling earache for some reason. Full of wax, aches like anything and feels as if I have a cold on one side of my head only. Another £14.80 for prescriptions. Still, yesterday was excellent so I suppose it all balances out

That reminds me: they still have a lovely dark grey 3 litre 960 estate for sale at D & A. Shame they want £3000 for it(!) Down from £4000 last time I was there... keep waiting...

Just think of all the camping stuff you could put inside... you don't have to worry about the mpg - keep your S40 and just take it for one or two trips a year, and the odd little run to keep it happy... and just polish and admire it the rest of the time. If things get really desperate you could probably live in it.

Don't! I haven't got £3k, I don't have anywhere to park it, and it would make my 740 jealous!
