Default Just bought a 2001 c70 that seemed to flare in 3rd

I hope I have as good of luck as yevgeniy but i dont think I will be as lucky. I bought a cheap 2001 c70 for the same $ with 106k miles on the clock. The interior and body are perfect with a little wear on the seats but nothing bad.

When I test drove it I thought it was just flaring in third and that i could just fix the valve body but I think it might be more. The car does not seem to engage at all in 3rd gear. I am worried that the third gear anchor bolt was removed to fill the trans. I will be taking the servo cover off tonight and draining the fluid in a white bucket.

Does anyone have suggestions besides replacing the trans.

Also I was looking for a good service manual? It did also have a code for the 3rd gear servo and a low 5v voltage. I dont have the # in front of me but I can get it later, and thanks for the other great posts in yevgeniy's thread.

Thanks

Aaron

try moving the gear leaver into 3rd position, drive and see if it does go into 3rd gear, if not. well you may be in trouble. if it does, then one of my solutions may work for you.

Feel your pain man, when i found out that trans rebuild costs almost twice what i paid for the car i thought i would just torch it.

It dosent seem to engage at all... I really think that someone tried to fill it through the 3rd gear anchor bolt. Since I have it partially apart I will try taking the valve body out and seeing if the solenoids have the correct resistance and that they seem to move.

There are a lot of posts out there on the valve bodies being the main problem in these boxes... One can only hope!

If someone slipped the third gear anchor bolt, it will be fairly straightforward (if annoying) to recapture the band and reinstall the bolt. There are some procedures on the web for doing it, fiddly and annoying but infinitely do-able with the trans still in the car.

If that turns out to not be the case, I'd wonder about a sticky solenoid or perhaps a knackered internal trans wiring harness. Again, both annoying and fiddly jobs but also both do-able with trans still installed.

Clear the codes down then post up what you get after a drive where the faults are apparent.

I did clear the codes and they did not reappear but I only drove it for 10 miles or so. I had to shift it manually to go past 3rd but it shifts fine in 1-2 and 4-5. I could not get it to engage in 3rd but maybe i was impatient and did not like the fact that it would just rev in 3rd.

I have not been able to find any of the procedures to reattach the anchor can you give me some key words that may help me find them?

Thanks so much Chris!

By the sounds of it you can almost guarantee that someone has tried to do an ATF change by undoing that lovely big inviting anchor bolt. If it is shifting in all other gears fine and nothing in 3rd it is almost a definite. Probably the reason the car was up for sale.

I have done some research on this anchor bolt and the lose of 3rd gear. I've also tried to find the web page I found at the time which actually had a step by step guide to recovering the band while still having the box in the car. I just wish I'd bookmarked it now.

Good luck with the getting it fixed.

Scroll down to the post by "cattlecar". His method is great, but if it just doesn't seem to be working out, you can also try removing the B4 servo cover and letting the piston pull out a little: that lets the band move a LOT more around the drum allowing you to get it into position.

Really, if this is the problem, the prognosis is GOOD for the trans being repaired without much trouble.

/Have fun!

I just found that and was about to post it up myself but you've beat me to it. The whole thread is worth a read through and especially the OP's story on his autobox.

With a bit of luck this threads OP can manage a succesful result with the aid of post #69 on page 7.

I pulled the b3 servo cover and the anchor bolt out tonight and sure enough the band was rotated. I will have to employ strategy b as well because I cannot get the servo to drop enough to get the band in place. I will post pictures later.

Thanks so much for the link!!!
