Default Electronic parking brake problem HELP PLEASE!!

Hi i recently have aquired a dash info fault "electronic parking brake service required"

I took it to my volvo dealers who plugged it in and told me that there was no communication to the parking brake module. They said they had tested the electronic parking brake module but this was fine. They also went on to say the problem would "probably" be a wiring issue.

Problem is my dealer charges £97 an hour just to take a "look" into this problem.

I would therefore appreciate it if anyone knows anything or has heard of this problem?

Also does anyone know where the electronic parking brake module is located?? At £97 an hour, i may as well employ myself to have a good look at the wiring around this module for any obvious faults

Muchas gracias!

Found the location of the epb module, in the boot, left hand side behind/under the fuse box

Checked all wiring and connections that I could get to, but nothing obvious

What car & age is it? I thought the electronic parking brake (as opposed to ones with cables!) were only on very recent volvos like the current S60.

What is it thats used to activate the brake?, MOT test definitely requires the handbrake to lock the wheels on the rolling road test, they also figure out some sort of efficiency figure from this also.

Its a 2007 s80, thought all the new shaped s80's had them?

And yes, as or 2012' electronic parking brakes must be fully functional with no dash warning lights illuminated, to pass its mot test. So no ignoring the annoying message!!!

Not all of them have epb. Some models have extra pedal for parking brake. And instead of switch there is a lever.

Hi Glen,

I guess those came in around 2007 then !.. a few Qs,

- Does it actually operate the braking?
- Have you tried powering everything down/removing battery / re connecting

(you may need to follow a sequence to that correctly (battery dis con i mean))

I would imagine the module must hook into the canbus to receive commands to lock or unlock the braking, post a pic of the module if you can. I wonder if it shares some commonality with fords EPB?

The early S80 like yours did have a problem with some control units failing , If there is is a live and earth going to the unit yet they cant communicate with it , It has to be faulty .
Yes a new module will need car specific software at a dealer to activate it .
