Here's a strange issue for the Smart Members
Hi Folks,
Ok, for the last few weeks now, my Volvo has been going into limp mode with the classic "Engine Service Required" message on the dash showing up. I've discovered a strange pattern to this little issue... Whenever I start the Volvo, she will always go into Limp mode with the "Engine Service Required" message whenever I go above 3,5000 revs for the first time. If I plant my foot right down on the accelerator, she won't go any faster as she's in Limp mode. However, after about 12-15 seconds of my foot being flat on the floor (and travelling around 60mph), the message disappears and the Volvo resets herself whilst driving. As soon as she does reset, she's perfect... She will not go back into Limp mode no matter how fast I drive or no matter how steep a hill I drive up. I can drive her for hours on end and she's beautifully smooth and fast. But, as soon as I switch the engine off, the problem will happen again as soon as I go above 3,5000 revs for the first time. Please note - the engine is always warmed up before I drive above 3,5000 revs and I've tried the above with a full tank of diesel, a half tank of diesel, when the ambient temperature is as low as 14'C and when it's up to as high as 22'C. There's just no rhyme or reason to it and I'm convinced it's got to be an electrical/sensor related issue. I've not yet had the opportunity to take the Volvo to the garage to have the codes read, as I've been working a lot recently, but here is a list of things I've had carried out to the old girl over the last 3 weeks: MAP Sensor cleaned. MAF Sensor cleaned. New Control Valve (for the engine mounts on air box). New Fuel Filter. New Oil Filter. Fully synthetic oil change. Surely some smart cookie on here will know what the problem is? |

Thanks, Jason.
I'll get take the Volvo to the local Volvo Specialist hopefully on Saturday of next week. I was just wondering if the characteristics I've described would point to something obvious that one of the more experienced forum members might have been able to definitively point me in the direction of what the problem is. |

Sounds like it could be throttle body related.
The codes should point you in the right direction though. |

People get really scared by the dreaded "Throttle body issue" but they are easy replaced and cheaper than most carburetors.
Quick search found this one http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/pr.../30711554.html I bought a blue tooth code reader off ebay that I access with my Android phone. Cost me $20 New Zealand rupees delivered. You can read codes, clear codes and see live data of MAF timing ETC. F in amasing! Not a professional tool I know but it has helped me out and saved me heaps$$$$$$$ JUST SAW THIS!!!!!!!!!! http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ght=etm+repair Last edited by Tardis007; Sep 4th, 2012 at 02:34. I wouldn't jump on the ETM band waggon just yet, for a start the car is a diesel and secondly 2003 so it shouldn't have the crap "MM" throttle motor fitted - Get the codes scanned and take it from there - Mike

Cheers for all the advice and pointers, Folks.
I'll definitely be taking the Volvo to my local Volvo garage as soon as I can get some time off work and they'll pull the codes for me Just weird that the Engine Service message will only ever come on once and then after it resets seconds later, it never happens again.... Strange... |
