Default Clutch release bearing > new clutch required??

I'm having 'issues' with the clutch on my S70 T5 (1997).

It sometimes makes a whining/moaning sound when setting off in 1st gear.

Apparently its the release bearing, which, after a bit of reading, I've found out that there's differeing opinions on this;

1. "It needs to be replaced ASAP"

2. "It just needs replacing whenever the clutch needs replacing"

Thoughts people.....

Cheers

Joe

P.S, should the clutch need replaced, I understand that I should replace every other part too, but just a couple of queries;

Q1. Is it worthwhile fitting an uprated clutch while i'm at it? (any reccomendations?)

Q2. Can anyone reccomend a decent independant garage that will undertake the work (preferebly in NW England).

Q3. How much am I looking at? Around the 500 mark??

A faulty release bearing only really makes a noise when the clutch is depressed as that is the only time the bearing is spinning.
I'd always replace clutch and bearing at the same time due to the labour cost of removing the gearbox.
A standard clutch will last around 100k miles under normal conditions so its up to you to decide if this is adequate.
A clutch kit costs about £170 and there is quite a bit of labout to add to that so yes I'd budget on £500

Oh, so any idea what's the problem with mine?

(It squeaks/moans on occasion when setting off in 1st gear, just at the point of biting)

Many thanks,

Joe

Cool

Now without hearing the noise I can't be sure, but from your description and my experience of such noises, (not on cars but on trucks) it could be the spigot bearing spinning in the flywheel. Although looking at my system (VADIS) it looks like it is in a recess in the crank shaft. Please correct me guy's and gal's if I'm wrong!!

If it isn't slipping then I'd leave it - it seems to be a 'feature' on some cars.

While doing the clutch and bearing, you may as well do the rear main seal while in there. Costs an extra hours labour and parts.

Cheers Steve so if it is a recess in the crank shaft, what does that mean?? with regards to;
1. What needs doing?
2. How much will it cost?

It also seems to make this noise (occasionly) when engaging 2nd gear at the point of biting, i'm not sure if it's actually slipping, or it's just the noise that's getting my attention!

Thanks for the feedback,

Joe

Without sounding rude, (I HOPE I DON'T) the best thing you could do is have the clutch replaced, if you are worried about the noise you have. I would replace the rear main oil seal, the spiggot bearing, and the entire clutch as well (pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing). It must be one of these at fault. It's a big job to get to all those things so you may as well replace the lot while your in their. I would!!

I here what you're saying steve, and I will do everything when the clutch needs replacing, but I might just leave it until it actually starts slipping.

It's working fine, it's just the noise that bugs me!

Cheers,

Joe
