Engine swap from B200K to B 230F
Hi guys,
Just to have your opinion about an engine swap I am considering now: - my trusty old friend, the 240 Dl has currently the B 200 K engine fitted with the "famous" Solex-Cisac carb on. Being already 28 years old it's far from "fresh" so I found a B 230 completely refurbished and would love to bring it home and "accommodate" it in the engine compartment. The questions are: - as that engine I am considering buying comes only with the intake and exhaust manifolds fitted - can I use the B 200 K intake manifold with the Solex-Cisac carb and all associated components for the air intake? - what about the ignition (distributor, rotor arm, cover, leads) are they still available in new for the B 230? - all water hoses can be reused (do they fit the B 230)? - the engine mounts are the same (B 200 K and B 230 )? - does my current transmission M 46 fit the B 230? - what type of clutch is needed? - the electrics (wiring harness) fit the B 230 or are they easily adaptable? Any other suggestion/info is welcome! Thanks and Cheers, Vic

The biggest problem I can think of is that the K has a mechanical fuel pump run off the auxiliary shaft, the F uses an electric fuel pump. The aperture where the fuel pump would sit on a K is not machined out on an F as far as I'm aware, at least it's definitely not on my 1993 B200F or the 1994 B230FT in the shed.
Re your other questions: 1) The cisac manifold should bolt right up, I think it's a heated manifold though and the F manifold isn't. The water holes in the head are still present, but blanked with freeze plugs that will need knocking out. 2) All the ignition components are still available from volvo as afar as I'm aware, the distributor is different so you'll need to swap that over. 3) Water hoses, engine mounts and transmission will fit as far as I'm aware, you will need to swap the flywheel as I think the electronic ignition setup on the K uses a different flywheel/sensor combo than the F. 4) The wiring loom should fit up fine, I can't think if any reason it wouldn't. Edit: fuel pump problem notwithstanding, alternative idea: yank out the b200k, the cisac, and that awful renix ignition system, and put the B230 block in with a set of weber 45s on it. yummy.

Many thanks wooble for your advice, info and tips.
Will keep you informed about the progress. First I have to get the engine @ home from Germany. Then it shouldn't be a problem fitting it. Cheers, Vic.

Just to illustrate, here's your big problem:
The yellow arrow marks where the mechanical fuel pump would bolt. On this engine (an FT) the aperture is not machined out, so a mechanical fuel pump can't be fitted. On your K engine there is a hole into the engine block here, where the fuel pump is mounted and driven from the auxiliary shaft. to use the FT block, you're going to have to find a way round that.

My defunct B200F engine has a machined hole behind the blanking plate.
But I don't think that matters. Just fit a general purpose SU electric fuel pump, from a vintage supplier, scrap yard, etc. The present carburettor will have jets appropriate for a 2.0 litre engine. These will need changing for the 2.3 litre or the mixture will be weak. After long and bitter experience with a B230K carburettor and the Renix system I'd take the opportunity to fit something else. Any earlier ordinary points distributor will fit, which you could convert to electronic with a stand alone system, as an alternative to trying to get the F ignition to work. The M46 will fit - I once converted a B200K 1993 to overdrive and it bolted straight on, using the same clutch. (very early cars had a smaller number of splines on the gearbox input shaft. If so you'd need the appropriate clutch plate) You need to move the gearbox support crossmember to the alternative position, but the captive nuts are there. You will I think need to swap over the prop shaft too. |

Many thanks wooble and Clifford Pope for the info, explanations and hints.
It's not that simple as I thought it would be as far as I see, until now. Will see what I can arrange. I still have no answer from the seller. Plus I have to arrange the transport to me. Still lots to do in order to have it home.

What do you think about the starter and charger (alternator)?
Can I use those fitted on my B 200 K to the B 230 ?
