Something missing on overhead cover (T4)
Hi,
I think there is something missing (a plug ?) on my overhead cover. I removed the timing belt covers, and I see a hole leaking oil all over the overhead (circled in red). The car is a 98 V40 T4. Someone knows what is supposed to be in that hole ? |

Dont know what the hole is for but the seal on the oil filler cap might have gone hence oil leaking out

Hi,
I've already replace the seal on the oil filler cap, and the oil is not leaking from the cap. I'm pretty sure it is from that hole on the side. If I don't find what is supposed to go in I'm going to plug it. There is a smaller threaded hole to screw something. |

When looking at the first picture, it looks to me like its coming from one of the bolts just behind cylinder 2's HT lead.

I really think it leaks from that circled hole. I can put a screwdriver 2 inches deep in, and there is oil in the bottom.

Well I pluged the hole with a screw, a washer and a seal. Not pretty, but I hope this will cut the leak.
Anyway if someone knows what is supposed to be there I'm still interested. I think it must be a sensor, screwed in the little threaded hole. Maybe a sensor wich is somewhere else on my car, because I can't see a wire near, and the car runs well. |

Or could it have something to do with VVT ? Obviously my car had no VVT, but I remember the cylinder head had been replace before I bought the car. It has been replaced by a Volvo official, but could he have mixed head or cam cover with a newer model with VVT?

I was going to say it looks like the vvt solenoid was missing but it's a phase 1 !!!

I have the exact same hole on my cylinder head and no oil comes out of it.
I would clean down the whole area and leave the car running while you keep an eye out. I would definitely say that its coming from that cam cover/carrier bolt just behind the coil pack on for cylinder 2. It may also be coming from the that bolt just adjacent to the hole you are talking about too. Its a case of following the oil trail.

Hi Chomerly,
You have the same hole and nothing in it ? And nothing in the little threaded hole neither ? I have pluged this hole and cleaned the area. I'll check in a few days in the oil is comming back. Thanks. |
