Question key / Fob question

For my 96 850 petrol estate I have one ignition key plus the seperate remote fob!
My Q is, as I have a seperate remote fob does that mean that the key is not chipped or anything, just a basic key to start the engine and open the doors manually if needed?

Hi there no the key is chipped with an internal transponder most good locksmiths should be able to clone the chip for the key but they mite have to order in the key blank so check availability first

Not all keys are chipped! Take it to Timpsons and they will tell you - or take the cowl off around the steering column to see if there is a transponder ring around the ignition barrel.

Immobilisers (which require chipped keys), were legal requirement from 1995 onwards.

dont think any 850 has a chipped key unless late one have the 70 type key

any chipped key to check you can cover the entire bottom piece in foil just poke the metal part through and wrap bottom in foil if its chipped the signal cant get through the foil

My 96 850 T-5 has the chipped key. I've not been able to get it copied as it has a Philips krypto 44 chip in it that has been locked by volvo. I've been told that a good mobile auto locksmith could do it, but it would still cost around £100 +

This is a pre MY96 key (from 92 to 95) where no immobilizer (original Volvo) was used. These MY had the VDO immobilizer with the plastic pin
From MY 96 Volvo introduced a "real" immobilizer which was connected with the engine ECU. The key also contains a chip which is read and compared to with the codes saved in the immobilizer. This also checks if the engine ECU is the right type and if this is also ok the engine can start .

The difference between the VDO immobilizer and the Volvo one are that the when the VDO kicks in the starter motor is dead, whereas the Volvo one lets you start the engine however the engine goes out after 2 seconds.

The second pic is from a 96 key with chip
