Default Turbo conversion

I've had a query from a middlle aged woman who has just decided that she wants to fit a turbocharger to her 240. My question is, how difficult is it to convert a NA car to Turbo (obviously using a 740/760TIC for a donor)?

Hi,

Middle aged woman??!! Hmmm....

Well the engine itself won't be that much of a problem to fit as the engine compartments are huge in both and will have similar mounting points and similar exhaust layout..
Problem may be the steering column or brake cylinder and whether thay may interfere with the turbo's location...

Then all you'll need to really worry about is the ECU and associated wiring. That will be the more complex matter.
A word with powernut who put the T5 in the beetle may prove to be worth its weight in gold here. He has experience os how to get round this issue..

Silly question but wasn't there a 240 Turbo?? Could be used as an example and will be documented (wiring diagrams etc)..

Des. . .

It may be as simple as making an adapter to tilt the turbo up or to one side , you will need to offer up the manifold to the original engine to see what fouls ... The original 240 turbo probably had the large Garrett turbo , who knows the later Mitsubishi turbo and manifold may fit straight on with clearance ...

From reading various other posts on the issue here, and articles on the web, it's a reasonably simple conversion for a left hand drive car.

Right hand drive cars suffer from the turbo being too close to the brake master cylinder, and overheating the brake fluid leading to alarming brake fade. There is also an issue with steering column clearance, but only under acceleration. This can be overcome with poly engine mounts (allowing less movement of the motor).

I think a 16 valve conversion would be cool though...

Happy Christmas!

never heard any australians complaining about alarming brake fade , anyway - its realitively simple , just need the donor car .

I have done this in lhd - no major problems. As yet I don't know of a uk rhd conversion. The issue of the space around the turbo can be seen in my pics:

I have heard that its not possible but this is the first time I've seen pictures of a rhd 240 turbo, perhaps the rumors stem from people trying to fit oversized turbos.

Can I ask what exhaust manifold and turbo it is? also, LH2.4?

Ive seen you can buy rally pedalboxes with the fluid tanks and master cylinders on the inside of the bulkhead, maybe this would solve the problem of overheating master cylinders?

Looks like a LHD car to me. Brake booster on the left and no steering column on the right.

Default Turbo 240

I have seen one example of a converted R/H drive 240 and the main issues were that the steering column and exhaust front pipe had to be extensively modified due to limited space for the turbo.
Volvo did produce a 240 Turbo as standard but only in L/H drive guise.
