Default Jensen P1800 Smiths Rev counter

First up, I have done a bit of research on this before asking, so here are some links for anyone else who finds this thread in the future;

http://sw-em.com/Smith's%20Tachometer.htm
http://www.classictiger.com/techtips/motach.html
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=48795
http://sw-em.com/service%20notes.htm...al%20Equipment
http://volvo1800pictures.com/documen...stem_p1800.pdf

Anyway, that second last link has a photo of the same type of tach I have. It should have an external Rev Counter Pickup (on page 52 of the pdf, part number 21). My car is missing that pickup, therefore the rev counter doesn't work!

Does anyone know what the pickup is? I guess its just a transformer to feed isolated signals to the guage. If its that simple though, why would Volvo decide to mount in in front of the radiator? Is it something that gets hot?

If it is just a transformer, does anyone know if it changes the output voltage from the coil before feeing to the guage? Better yet, does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

And more out of curiosity, what is the second electrical contact on the second last link? To the right hand side, below the light fitting. I have nothing connected up to that, but the wiring diagram just has the single connection shown (not counting earth).

Thanks in advance.

Well, thats a week with no response. I guess I will try a 1:1 transformer to isolate the ignition from the guage, and see what happens. If it lets all the smoke out then I guess its time to buy a new rev counter.

If it does work then I will update here.

Allister;

I posted for info on the Brickboard also, and had no resposes either...sorry...I guess the two piece tavhs are fairly rare...I do seem to recall info I saw on one of your links which allows identification of the one-piece or two piece type...their faces are slightly different...if you confirm in this way, that yours is a two piece, I believe the kit offered here would get you up and running: http://members.shaw.ca/tsmit/tachmod/tachmod0.html

Please keep me informed of your progress as I am compiling all useful info I can on this. TNX.

Cheers from Connecticut!
