Is this a good price? - DPF additive topup
"engine service required" has been displayed for a while, and car has very recently started going into limp home mode if ECU thinks I'm over-revving.
called William A Lewis in shrewsbury, they say £30 for diagnostic check. Car comes back with 2 permanent erorrs: 1) DPF additive tank empty 2) air sensor errors - permanent error logged on ECU Man behind service counter said "dont worry about paying for the diagnostic" They want £200 to refill additive tank & replacement + fit new air sensor. Is that reasonable? |

£20 for diagnostic , £110 to top up and reset additive tank was what I paid.
Not sure about sensor (ie where it is and what it does) so can't comment. Is this part of additive system? I suspect that your add tank was not properly refilled at service and if engine has been run for a long period with regeneration of particulate filter not being carried out correctly, then you may well have a blocked filter, hence limp home mode. If this is the case you may well need replacement DPF which is around £500. Has the car been fully serviced by Volvo or has non franchised dealer carried out service, or that non service has been done.? |

Surely with the additive it should just burn off the soot no problems? |

Also you will be burning more fuel and creating more soot the harder you go. The fuel additive is there to increase combustion and exhaust gas temperature, therefore guaranteeing the filter will be cleared of soot. It is added to the fuel tank when more than 20ltrs of fuel are added, which is why in my case the "engine system service" message came up on my car after refueling. Just a thought though. |

V50 "ESSR" msg
Hi,
I've just brought a V50 Euro IV 2.0 D 2005 (115000 miles)and when you drive it hard the power cuts out at about 4000 rpm and the msg appears. Do I need to take it to a volvo dealer to get the additive tank topped up. the last 2 services have been carried out by Nationwide Autocentre and I cannot be sure if they've topped it up. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Well, I'd get the codes read first. If any of the engine control sensors flag an error , then car will drop in to limp mode. My car has had limp home condition from air manifold temp sensor as well as pressure differential sensor (DPF)
I think I'd ask auto centre if additive was topped up and if system was reset as this has to be done at same time to zero the count. If they say no, then it may well be a top up required. Just hope that DPF can then regenerate properly. |

you can tell by the 8th character in the VIN . 3 = Euro 3 no additive no particle filter 4 = Euro 4 but with no particle filter or additive tank 5 = Euro 4 With additive and particle filter
