RE: Good evening New owner
Welcome!
Mod's....few and far between i'm afraid. www.needforspeed.co.uk. Thats where i got some of my stuff from as it was reasonably priced. They do a car specific section, where they list all the parts they stock for that particular car. You won't find much else for the 440 as it is a Grandad Volvo car after all! My alloys were only £500 delivered with Yokohama tyres, my springs were just under £100. You could have a Powerflow custom exhaust made up as no-one makes a backbox for them. Volvo did make a bodykit for the 440, but it was a good 15 years ago and if you can't afford the £1,100 price tag for a new one, then good luck finding a scrapped one! (Loads of us on here have been looking for ages!). There is a chap on the forum called Dave who has his own company and develops parts for Volvo's-if you search the members list on here, you will see davebslater(uk)-contact him and see what he can do. I know he's helped Matt out quite a bit with his 440. Just all depends how much money you have to spend. What model/reg/colour is your 440 then?

RE: Good evening New owner
Hi.
Not to sure how to wire one of those up-not seen one in a 440 before! With regards to lowering the car, springs do harden the ride, but it's still a bit spongy because of the standard Volvo shocks. In retrospect, i wish i had got some uprated shocks at the same time-it looks good lowered, but the handling can sometimes be a little roly-poly. I think Bilstein do a spring/shock kit at quite a reasonable price. Might be worth checking out...

RE: Good evening New owner
Springs and shocks should always be replaced together when you change the setup, e.g. fit lowering kits or sports suspension to standard cars. For road saftey reasons but also because the effect is more than double that of replacing just the one or the other. A good, solid suspension is the first and often most important step to a nice and fast car. There is little point in increasing the power output from a car if the handling and grip is not there. The next step would be the brakes. I am not sure but did the turbo cars have better brakes than the NA cars? If so, a set of turbo calipers from a breaker should not be hard to get hold of, and then pads and discs from Volvo or from Eurocarparts or such.
I have no idea if you like this but these older cars can easily be upgraded to look like the new style 440s. You need, I believe, a bonnet, tailgate, bumpers and front headlights. A breaker will help. Some nice alloys on good tyres will also help. There are plenty of designs that came standard on the 400 range and these could, again, be bought second hand. Inside you could, for example, add leather and power options from a scrapped, newer 440.
Well, just my 2 pennies worth. If you wonder, I have had a few of these 400 series.

RE: Good evening New owner
Hi George
This is my first mod'd car, so i was never aware of the Spring/Shock outfit-didn't realsie it was a road safety issue! I would like to replace my shocks, but am a little concerned that the car might sit a bit high. When i replaced the shocks on my first 440, it sat about 3 inches higher than it did before-just didn't want the same to happen again! Are uprated shocks shorter than regular shocks? If anything i'd like it to sit a bit lower. What do i need to look for when looking for some new ones-any help appreciated.
With regards to brake's, the only major difference *i think* was that Turbo discs were vented and the NA ones were not. Something worth considering no less.
Cheers,
Dan M

RE: Good evening New owner
yeah i will be doing the springs and the shocks together i had a pug205 before this and it made such a difference to the handling that was a 40mm drop and uprated spax shocks. but yeah dan defintly worth getting them all done at the same time.
i'm sure i can change some of it to the newer spec bits, just not been able to find any in the scrappy to play with yet! something to do this weekend though.
update is - new pioneer headunit, 600w vibe amp, 12" sub, Alpine amp running standard front speakers and the tacho.
next bit will be a new cone filter/induction kit. after i pay my car tax :(

The turbo discs are indeed vented but are also bigger than the other models, as were the pads. Discs all round and ABS.

RE: Good evening New owner
Hhmmmmm....road tax....something i've not had the last month. She's all SORN in the drive way bless her :( So is anybody using uprated shock here then? The car has been lowered 40mm on Avo springs, but they don't make shocks for the 440. Can anybody reccomend some good shocks that won't break the bank or make the car sit about an inch higher?!

RE: Good evening New owner
One point I'd like to bring to light.
I dont know if anyone else has had the same problem, but the original Volvo wheel trims, the type on the pic posted by our new welcomed friend, were discovered to be cutting into tyres. :o
When I took my car in for work, the mechanics discovered serious tracks cut into the tyres by the wheel trims. Had made the tyres very dangerous, and cost me 2 new tyres. Ouch.
Just thought I'd mention this. ;-)
Take care everyone.

ooh nasty, i hadnt noticed this but i can see if driven hard into corners then yeah as the trims are quite wide they might well cause problems.
