    Dodgy V90 key fob.

    Evening all

Has anyone had their central locking key fob decide to stop working once they've locked their car? I've got a '97 V90 and currently can't start the car as my immobiliser is now on. 🤬🤬🤬

    Any help is very appreciated.

    Cheers

Have you renewed the batteries in the remote handset? If not, do it and then try pressing the lock button about 6 times rapidly and then the unlock button about 6 times rapidly. Sometimes they go out of sync, especially if the battery is low (even if it still lights up the LEDs) so this normally resyncs them.
    Cheers

I changed the batteries about 3 months ago, it's worked fine since. My key fob has just the lock/unlock singular button so is it the same process I just press the button 12 times?

      Cheers

Renew the batteries again and hit the button at least 6 times rapidly. If that doesn't cure it you have another problem. I know on some later 960s you can actually pull a fuse or two and get yourself going as it disarms the immobiliser but which ones i don't know off the top of my head.
Also whether yours falls into that category is another question..........

I stuck some new batteries in it this morning tried the rapid press 6 times and it's still the same. If I can get hold of another fob how difficult is it to programme it?

          Cheers

No idea on reprogramming a replacement fob, if it doesn't tell you in the original handbook then a Volvo dealer should be able to advise you on that one.

However, as Jim rightly said there are workarounds, i'm not familiar with them and also you need to know which alarm you have. Once you work out which system you have, try searching the forum for that alarm system, there have been a number of threads on the various alarm systems.

So the situation as it stands is this, I spoke to a very helpful Volvo dealer near me and they said that if replacing the batteries doesn't work then you need to switch the ignition on/off 5 times to re sync the remote to the alarm. I have done this and as far as I can tell the red LED on the top of the dash doesn't blink rapidly to signal I'm in sync mode.

Also according to the owners manual the 3 clicks I can hear when I push the button on the remote means it needs new batteries but like I've said they've been replaced.

Is it possible I've got a knackered chip in the remote or that the actual car battery is on its way as and theres a voltage drop?

                  Any help is greatly appreciated.

                  Cheers

What position are you turning the key to when you swith the ignition on and off? Also are you switching the ignition on again after the 5 on/off cycles?

Replaced or renewed? If renewed, where did you get them from and did you check the date on the packing?

It's possible the vehicle battery is on its way out, have you checked the voltage on it with a meter?

I'm leaving the key in the on position on the 5th turn. I've tried two sets of batteries and the earliest date was 2023 whi h I consider to be in date?

I will check the battery voltage over the weekend and report back. Fingers crossed it's a battery problem on the car. Lol expensive I know but easy to replace.

                      Cheers Dave.

Just something to try, after the 5th on/off with the ignition switch (to position 2, just the warning lights), try switching the ignition off and see if the LED starts doing what the Volvo guy indicated.

Those remote batteries sound as if they should be ok but could be worth checking the voltage on them as well, just to be sure.

Essential to the procedure is that all 5 doors are closed first; then the ignition must be switched on and off 4 times; the 5th time the ignition is switched on the dashboard led will blink rapidly; subsequently up to 3 fob's can be programmed by pressing their button; after that the procedure is terminated by switching the ignition off.

So as it stands I've checked the car battery condition which is fine and the key fob batteries are fine but for some reason the car won't let me go into the programming mode i.e the LED doesn't flash rapidly after the ignition sequence.

Is the sequence something I need to do multiple times before it'll work? Or do I have another problem somewhere else?

I'm close to calling an auto lock specialist I'd just rather try a few more things before it come to that.

                            Cheers

At the risk of stating the obvious, when our friend from the Netherlands says it's "Essential to the procedure is that all 5 doors are closed first", that does include the drivers door.

You might think i've lost my marbles but i've seen it done! Wasn't on a Volvo but on a car having an alarm/immobiliser installed.

Also does the interior light come on when you open the doors? If not, make sure it comes on when the doors are open then ensure they are all shut before attempting the procedure.

As for contacting an auto lock specialist, probably wouldn't be able to help to be honest. An autoelectrician would be a better idea.
