About three years ago when I was having sudden power loss problems there was someone else on the forum ( think name was 'rocky' ) having similar problems with a V70 D5 , think it was 2002 or 2003 model . They eventually had the cat replaced at a main dealer and problem went away , sorry I cannot find the thread but its on here somewhere . A failing cat on a Euro 3 D5 would be rare unless its had a mechanical shock and the insides have collapsed and there are no oxygen sensors unlike the later D5 engines .

well as I can not be sure its NOT the turbo I guess I need to put the same one on, still not convinced that this will be the problem as my logic says that both turbos came of same engine/year both have self contained wastegates even if one is external other internal, if they were different years or engines then I could understand it better, guess that is why I am not a vehicle mechanic. Tonight I went to a friends house to borrow some ramps (quicker and easier than jack and axle stands) and it did not smoke but I did not rev it over 2000 rpm and mostly under 1500 for the mile or so each way, such a frustrating fault.

Removed turbo with external wastegate in preparation for the delivery of internal type hopefully early tomorow, had a tinker with the external one and found the vacuum operated arm to the variable blades very stiff/sticky which is now freed up whats the betting this would make an acre of difference and maybe even run faultlessly, if other one doesnt turn up then it will go on tomorow afternoon as the car has to get me to work and we will see what happens

Your exhaust silencer(s) will be contaminated with oil and will produce smoke once the gas going through them is hot enough, it should burn off over time.

I had to change the engine on the Nissan Micra the wife had when she first passed her test due to excessive oil consumption. Jap import engine fitted which was in very good condition, ran great but still smoked like hell - After a week I fitted a new exhaust and we had no further issues with smoke from the car.

Exhaust silencers are filled with a form of rocksill wool, almost like fibre-glass wool, this soaks up the oil and produces smoke for ages until it's either burnt off from the exhaust gas flowing through it or the exhaust is changed for a new/ non oil contaminated one - I doubt the Cat will be damaged as that runs at a much higher temperature so it will have already got rid of any oil residue - Mike

Jason , the two turbos you have are completely different , the one with a wastegate releases pressure when it opens , the variable nozzle type is never fully closed or holding back pressure and also has no bypass which the older style wastegate turbo has . In post 4 you said the blades were damaged and the shaft has play , its likely the oil seals are gone thats why its sucking out oil , dont put the old turbo back on if its really bad , sticking vanes in the variable nozzle could be an additional problem but its nothing to do with your original problem . Post a photo looking into the turbo inlet , you can tell how bad it is looking at the blade damage , if there are bits missing off the edges of the blades then its hitting the outer case as it spins and you then have maybe an hour or even just a few minutes before it goes to the billowing white smoke stage and sparks coming out your exhaust. Once there are a few chunks missing from the blades the balance is lost so the rotor chatters against the outer case then its like a chain reaction it rapidly goes downhill , its quite a spectacle when they let go completely you wouldnt believe the amount of white smoke they can make .

Sadly the replacement turbo did not arrive in time for work so refitted the external wastegate turbo (having made sure the vacuum cylinder and arm that adjusts amount of blade action was as free as possible) the car runs in a similar fashion to before. The car smoked by the end of the journey approx 20 miles but this smoking has decreased over the 8 journeys but I guess it still needs alot more time to burn all oil residue from exhaust. I will sooner than later fit non external wastegate turbo so car is back to original set up.
