Only things that will work on your car is the autel 702 Volvo dice/vida or a high end snapon tool.

I have a 2004 S40 1.9T, USA model. I have used OBDII tools from O'Reilly's and Auto Zone, both cleared codes for a misfire (H2O in gas) and sticking thermostat. I bought a rather inexpensive one from Amazon. About 18 dollars plus shipping, have not used it as of yet....

Air bag modules will either require either a specific air bag light reset tool or a high spec diagnostic tool as mentioned by Darlo 1.

You won't do it with any of the cheap OBDII tools (or the expensive ones either).

OBDII really only covers emissions related sensors on the engine.

Are there any of the "basic" models able to read out airbag fault codes? Happy to have the reset done at a workshop, but good to know what to expect in terms of repairs/fault source etc.

ELM 327 or similar - or will DICE be needed nontheless to have anything besides engine codes (as mentioned in a few threads).

Yeah we have a couple of generic obd2 readers at work, one is an autel one that just has 2 arrow buttons and Y and N buttons on and not sure what make he other one is, they just aren't compatible with these cars, I tried yesterday and both come up with linking error, although I'm not sure i trust generic readers anyway as my mate at work had a stored code on his 52 plate golf gti 1.8 turbo and the message was "system too rich bank 1" Banks, on a 4 cylinder, ooookay then lol

The elm327 will reset te airbag light for S/V40s from 1997 to 1998 only using the Vol-FCR software.

For late Phase 1 cars from mid-late 1999 and all Phase 2 to 2004, the Volvo DICE, EU702 and other premium AUTEL products and the very expensive scanners used in garages will be able to reset the SRS.

                What year is your car?

Due to compatible protocols not being compulsory in Australia until after, the production run of this model and despite an installed scanning socket, so called "OBD11" compliance was not introduced in Australian delivered versions of this car

Ebay or otherwise sourced OBD11 type scanners do not work

Genuine Dealer Volvo Vida Dice OBD11 protocol does NOT work

Does anyone repair faults before clearing codes

Hiya mate, it got to me as well but a 4 cylinder IS Bank 1. At least he has no bank 2 codes! Cheap generic reader - £18 - has helped me a lot but it wont do airbag.

I got my 1.8 (non gdi) last Christmas and it has been great. Can't fault it at all and will definitely be keeping it for a few years.
