Though I just can't wrap my mind around how it's even related to the brake light check. From what I've read there's a reed switch that switches on when there is current imbalance resulting from different resistances between bulb circuits. How would a faulty brake switch affect anything?

I knew this isn't right, yet this problem is so common that some people insist that this is how it should be. Did anyone in the history of mankind fix this annoying problem? I've heard one mechanic say that it's the brake switch messing around (the one under the pedal, activating the lights), so I'm considering replacing it.

I have just checked how the warning lights on my car operates.
Turn the ignition on, but do not attempt to start. All warning lights come on. Within a second or two the bulb failure light goes out along with various other self test lights. After a few more seconds, other lights extinguish, ABS and a few more, all too quick to make a note. After a few more seconds the engine service light goes out to leave just the battery and handbrake light illuminated. Obviously the normal procedure is to turn on the ignition and immediately start the car, so the sequential extinguishing of the lights is not apparent.
The bulb failure light on mine works exactly as it should. A couple of weeks ago it came on due to the nearside brake light blowing, changed the bulb and all good again. The above might not be of any use to you, but at least that is how an original car with a correctly working system works.2001 V40 2.0lt Sport Lux - Daily Driver. 190k miles.
