Do all diesel XC60's have DPF

    Hello to all Volvo experts.

I am going to buy XC60 (used one) but now i am getting scared of DPF problems reported by others.

The thing is that I will be driving 99% in the city - mostly short distances < 10km. As i did read - DPF needs long distances and longer time driving to do its recovery.

Now i would like to ask - Does every diesel XC60 have DPF? (I am considering D5 AWD MY2009)
I would rather not have DPF in my car...

If all diesels have DPF - is it a problem if i do not drive long distances? I have read quite scary stories :(

    Thanks for all answers!

No issue here after two weeks of local only driving (2 x 3.5 km to/from work every day) - have not seen dreaded message at all in the last 26 months.

Admittedly, I usually drive somewhere further during weekend, so one would assume that things get cleared...

As long as you act on messages displayed things should be fine .
The first message advises a drive if the particle filter starts collecting too much soot .. so you drive as soon as possible , you dont need high speed or high rpm just a drive at 50 mph for 15 minutes or so and the message will go . If you ignore this message you get a more serious message later on when it says SOOT FILTER FULL , you have to take the car to the dealer then to have a forced regeneration .
If you ignore the soot filter full message you will end up with more than 100 gm of soot in the particle filter and require a new particle filter ...
My comments are only based on my opinions and vast experience .

Get a petrol. ALL Euro 5 category cars are REQUIRED to have a DPF to meet the standards.

they do not need such longer runs or revs now but driving round the city is not going to do it much good.

I would be happy to get petrol, but fuel consumption is so high as far as i know (did see numbers like 13mpg) for petrol XC60 in the city :money:

Was reading about Euro 5 - it is effective from 1st Jan 2009 - does it mean that all diesel XC60's manufactured from 2009 already must have DPF? (Checking ads for used cars - some mention car having DPF, some not...)

any car will be inefficient in the city because of the nature of constantly changing gears and stop/start nature.I mean i know someone with a focus ST getting 8mpg round town.

Was not january 2009 it was September 2009 that the introduction of vehicles needing to be Euro 5 compliant as it is one year before they have to have full implementation...which was September 2010.

Try to buy one with DPF already replaced if you're looking at a 2009 car. I bought a 2010 car when 20 months old and DPF went within a month @21k miles -fixed under warranty and dealer advised the new sensor was much more durable as Volvo had improved the quality (don't know if true or telling me what I wanted to hear). At end of summer I got a warning of soot filter - I was commuting 25 miles on country roads but driving economically ie changing up before 1800 RPM. I drove in a lower gear for 15 mins holding around 3000 RPM, switched eng off and after work light was off again. Instead now, once a week when engine warm I rev it to 3200 RPM a couple of times and never had problem since. My advice, don't let this put you off a brilliant car - buy the diesel for the economy and try to find one that had the DPF sensor replaced already. When you get it, delay changing gear when taking off from the lights a couple of times a week, as somebody said earlier its about engine revs - not speed of the car. Enjoy and this friendly forum is best place to learn the tricks!

the DPF is not a serviceable item on 5 cyl engines. It is not surprising the soot filter warning came up because of the nature of the driving.

The problem is your never going to get any revs driving through a city environment, and it is unlikely to be constant enough for that nature.

Can't a DPF be removed and the ECU remapped accordingly? I know it would invalidate warranty but should improve mpg. Is it legal ?

yes it can be done as for whether it would be legal come MOT time hmm could be interesting as i know they need to have CAT's in place as they check on the MoT now, so as for DPF's??? i am not sure.

If you search 'XC60 DPF' on eBay there's a tuning agent offering a remap to switch DPF off claiming there's no effect on mot and a further claim of improved economy...

not really got an option in it if your not doing enough miles to justify it.
