That is the track rod. The washer 10 is a cam washer and controls the toe in and toe out for the rear wheels. Loosen off nut 12 and turn bolt 9 which in turn will rotate the washer against a flange on the stay. This will alter the rear tracking. It is the likely cause of your wear. Unless you have tracking equipment I suggest you get 4 wheel alignment done.

thanks for that, right i have a problem, the arm is bent slightly if i recall i hit something about 4 months ago and did not give it a second thought.i have a couple of questions.
would it be possible to track without changing that part.
if not how easy is it to change the part and then take it for tracking has any one changed one.could i change it myself ??

also i have fitted auxiliary spring assistors that have raised the car which i have fitted for towing the caravan.would this have any effect on getting the tracking done
your comments as always will be appreciated.
      thanks

It looks fairly easy to change. As to the tracking, it would depend on whether the bend in the arm is bad enough to prevent the tracking from being brought into limits. Depending on how bad the bend is and if any damage has occurred, you could remove it and try and straighten it out. Alternatively, how much is new one? Considering it has the ability to cause uneven wear and the cost of a tyre, it may be worth changing.

            Mike,

iirc TimW had to unbolt one of my rear track arms when fitting the IPD arb to the barge. Simply unbolted one end and dropped it down. He marked the position before unbolting it so it essentially went back in the same position. Didn't seem to be too bad a job although I was only "supervising" LOL.

I did get the tracking and alignment checked when the work was finished as we had changed both arb's but Tim being Tim, little needed to be changed  Might be worth giving Tim a bell and having a quick chat.

looking at the special tool it lifts the control arm to the correct settings that it should be before the bolts are correctly torqued.so in thereory could i put a jack under the side effected and raise that control arm to the required spec

Nice one.Not thrilled at the prospect of letting the jack take the full weight of a corner. Would be tempted to refit the wheel and sit it on the floor and use the jack to trim the height if there is enough room to get at the stay screws. Must get ricco to have a look at this - see if he has saggy springs.

what i was thinking . is putting another jack just to lift the control arm to the desired spec.

just me . I'm paranoid about jacks - put them is the same category as a jackinthebox

so in theory that should work, my next point is as the car will not be level ie jacked in the middle to take car up on one side then use another jack under the control arm to lift that up. would that throw out the specs when adjusting to the required specs.
oh and just as an after thought new Track Rod arm £30 , second hand £10 and tarted up just in the last hour, .

Can't see it making much difference. Would be keeping an eye on the roll bar if you have one. You could always park across a slope:lightbulb:

                          Mike,
Per our wee natter earlier (grey matter not what it used to be LOL).

Thinking back, Tim jacked the back of the car up and then placed two large wooden blocks under the car just in front of the rear wheels to fully support it. Then wheels off to mess about with the arb. The old one came out "easily" enough but getting the IPD one back in was struggle. He used either a smaller trolley jack or a bottle jack to compress the rear spring and unload the "dexion" control arm before unbolting or rebolting it back up.
