Can you clean a turbocharger without removing it?

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could clean the turbocharger on my D5 without removing it from the car?

you mean the VNT if so there is a way but it is not very good you need to take the turbo off to get a good clean, why do you need to do it anyway.

      The usual ECM-6805 problem,
I was hoping to avoid having to put the car up on ramps because I'm usually on my own when I'm working on the car.
So no one to wave me on to them, also my drive is soil and gravel so the ramps move sometimes.

Thanks for the reply, I've had time to look at the links you gave me, especially this one http://uk-audis.net/forums/p/2730/20733.aspx
Has anyone tried the liquid cleaner method? I'm not sure about pouring anything corrosive into the VNT. Surely there must be a seal of some sort wouldn't it be damaged by the liquid?

from what i have read about this fluid it only gets to one area, so my take on it it will only do half a job, if you suspect the vnt i take it you have been down all the other routes then get the turbo off at least then you no it will be done properly.

I want to do the job properly so it looks like I'll have to take it off then.
What's the best stuff to clean it with?
or should I just use a wire brush and elbow grease?

Little bit of a expert on this !

Ok... the cleaning solution is NOT important . Oven cleaner etc will be fine .
I have seen how its done using the "innotec" method. Works a bit but does in no way clean it very very well.In fact it only just works .

Removing the turbo and cleaning it , has it looking like a shiny watch and it works a dream .

save the money on the "snake oil" and use that towards any labour costs etc

Mine was done by a specialist and we used "Mr Muscle" !

we had used the Innotec method and after opening the turbo up it was obvious that only a very small % had been cleaned

Have you tried giving it loads of welly? Mine was playing up a few months back, but following advice from here and my local garage I started using the right foot a bit more, also doing 3500-4000 rpm in third for 15-20 mins every so often. Also a long fast trip to the Lakes, and since then no probs. (Probably jinxed myself now!)

I have tried giving it loads of welly, sometimes it goes like the clappers and others it just fades and the engine service warning comes up.
So I'm thinking I've tried everything else so surely it must be something sticking just some of the time.
The VNT is the only thing left, I think anyway.

                      when you see a "naked"

turbo you will understand its not as easy as a "Italian tune up"

It took 2 hours to drop the turbo, undo it and get it all cleaned out . re fit etc .When you see the difference using a minivac before and after . Its amazing how bad the issue is.

I've just watched a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GC1Jc267IM and you can hear the same screeching sound when he moves the lever as I get when I activate the VNT with a minivac.
Am I right in thinking that that sound couldn't be made by the diaphragm that moves the lever arm.

I'm not sure I understand the question, I was working the VNT arm using the mittyvac, I had the vac pipe to the VNT hooked up to the mittyvac.

the three videos are excellent .This is what we did . The guys who did it are fast ,They could take a turbo off in their sleep . seeing the vanes move correctly is a lovely sight and one worth spending the money . YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE ! rather than squirting a cleaner in and hoping it will work

But, how DIY is it to remove a D5 turbo ?
