Forty - I had similar problems after buying my 00-07 shape 2007 V70 a few years ago.
Drove away and immediately engine system service required... Turns out it was the swirl flap actuator arm that had come off which is on the front left of the engine under the cover by the thermostat iirc.
In my experience 3 drain and fills with the transmission makes a difference and resetting the adaptions in Vida is a must. Software update made no difference in my opinion just use the correct fluid don't substitute it for lower quality claiming the same spec. I got mine from autodoc genuine aisin fluid and other times direct from Volvo.
The fact you got home from the 4h drive suggests maybe your problem isn't too bad?

Edit - I also found the 90deg rubber hose by the egr was very clogged with soot deposits, definitely worth removing and cleaning, mine had about 10-15mm around the inside! Massive difference after I cleaned it

Thanks v much, Sam1, re that swirl flap thing. Mine needs attention - clicks away for a while after turning the engine off. Need to look up on here about that job I guess!

I'll get the adaptions re-set as you suggest. I avoid the main dealer at all costs, but this is a necessary visit.. Just to nip in for a headlight bulb involves much too much pomp and latte!

The gearbox has definitely worsened in the last week. Flare-up and judder more so than before. Towing, which I need for work, is a nono. The 110 Land Rover I have hired is torture, physically as well as financially. The sawmill weighs just over 11/4 tons, single axle. For the XC70 it is a match made in Heaven. For 17 years I used Landcruisers and Troopers. I am amazed how capable the XC is even off the road. Though I've not fitted the Grabbers or BFGs yet ;)

10-15mm around a hose is some restriction!! I'll look at that too. Thanks again for all,

Forty

I just checked and post #74 on my thread here has the part numbers on from summer ‘21, they totalled £15 then including replacing the mangled drain level T40 plug. Have they doubled in price?

Part numbers may help track them down elsewhere but I’d stick with the genuine parts so they just fit.

Local volvo dealer parts dept. for those.

The eBay seller Volvopartstrade is also very good for genuine parts if you want them posted to you.

A part conclusion at least...

Caledonian Transmissions ran diagnostics on it and said they did not think it was a gearbox issue but a problem with the turbo.

Weeks later and the turbo actuator is replaced. The car runs much better. I still have what feels like a gearbox judder between 30 and 40 when accelerating, but this will have to wait for attention.

Thanks to all here and elsewhere for help with this!

Tell me more about that turbo actuator. Is it vacuum or electronic?

P3 chassis Volvo's have electronic turbo actuators.

P2's were vacuum.
