Swirl flap

Hello,

I noticed that the plastic connecting rod/link for the swirl flap on my car is just hanging & isn't connected to anything. I don't actually know how long this has been like this for, but it caught my attention today. I did notice when I touched it at closer inspection that it was quite oily, so I can only presume that as it isn't connected that the flaps aren't actually doing anything?

1. Is this a major issue that needs to be fixed ASAP?

2. The car seems to be running fine, but what effect does this have not actually being connected?

3. The connecting rod looks like a cheap bit of plastic if I'm being honest. I'm wondering if there's some kind of cheap service kit that you can buy, or are there any DIY tricks that you may know of to attach the rod again?

My car is a P3 2007 S80 2.4 D (163bhp) if that helps.

I’m going to ring Volvo tomorrow to see if they sell a new connecting rod on its own.

they do , but the ball will be worn on the swirl shaft coming out the head , so it is likely to fall off again it needs the swirt throttle shaft and link rod replaced unless you can make up something with model aircraft metal ball & Socket joints ..

Thanks Cian. So do they sell the shaft & link rod, or is it a whole set of swirl flaps if I can’t make something to hold it in place?

Kev, have a look on the P2 V70 forum for solutions, it's well covered.

I agree with Clan, as usual!

yes , both available , link rod about £5 swirl shaft about £80 however the cost of this job is in the 5 injector pipes and clamp kits as they can only be used once if you don't want trouble later on .

Here's how I fixed mine for about 5 pence:

It lasted fine, but I subsequently noticed a lot of play at the swirl-flap shaft, and ended up replacing the whole assembly...my write-up on that is below:

I'm not suggesting you have a go at replacing the whole thing, but some of the photos are useful to see how it all fits together.

I phoned the parts department at my local dealership earlier today. The chap I spoke to confirmed that my car has the 'later/upgraded' connecting link rod according to his system. I asked about the repair kit, but he told me that it wouldn't work on the link rod that my car has, as the repair kit is for the older link rod? He said he hasn't sold a repair kit for years, but can still get one delivered if needs be.

Anyway, I ended up buying the new/upgraded link rod & will have a go at fitting it this weekend.

Am I correct in thinking that the cars with grey engine covers (P3) shape all have swirl flaps? I've come across some V70's around the 2009 mark that have black engine covers... Are they just a newer version of the euro 3 with a DPF fitted, whereas the original euro 3 didn't have a DPF or swirl flaps?

Are they definitely D5s ?
My D5 was registered in November 07, and has the IV engine with silver cover. I can't imagine newer cars would have had 'older' engines.
