'86 740 Gle Timing Belt cover Issue
Greetings-
This is my first post and I hope that my newbie question doesn't insult some of you more salty dogs. I am currently attempting to change a head gasket on my newly acquired 740 non turbo and realized that the timing belt cover has been broken (the upper back portion has been separated from the bottom). This made it easy to remove the head without removing the cam gear, but what effects will this have? The cover seemed to be secured enough to match up the timing marks. Any comments? If the cam gear must be removed, what sort of tool will I need to acquire. Are there any other things I should give a good look to while the engine is apart? Thank you |

RE: '86 740 Gle Timing Belt cover Issue
well of course ideally it should be there although if it is missing it shouldn't cause a problem on its own. the danger would be if an small shards of plastic came off and flew into your timing belt. that obviously could be catastrophic! if i were you i'd replace it while you have it stripped. brand new they cost about £32.00 but you should have no problem picking up a good second hand one. to remove the pulley you'll need to lock it to undo the centre bolt, which shouldn't be too tight. there is a special volvo tool to lock the pulley but you should be able to find a universal one to do the job. preferably try and use one that locks into the holes in the pulley face rather than locking onto the pulley teeth . also seeing as you have disturbed the turbo it would be a good idea to replace the seal on the oil drain pipe from the turbo.it's bound to leak when you replace it if you don't. other than that there's nothing particular that should cause you problems. let us know if you get stuck on anything :-)
