When you bear in mind that the taxes and duty payable on fuel make up the bulk of the cost it becomes clear that the government are using fuel and energy suppliers as unpaid tax collectors. These taxes are highly regressive and almost completely unavoidable. If you are prepared to sit in the dark with no heating and get rid of your car you could avoid them but otherwise you are caught. It is even illegal to run your diesel on old cooking oil if you have not paid fuel duty on it.

I have no issues with taxing fuel to stop people using it and as a good revenue source....

.... providing that there is a decent alternative in place! Electric cars are crap! So is public transport! I have no option but to use for my car for work. I get a bit of expenses towards my cost but I still spend a few hundred pound per month on fuel.

Maybe if the US government stuck another dollar on a gallon of fuel it might help bring down their huge debt.

Netherlands here.

Average price for the country (Non highway prices) per litre:

95 RON: €1.75 = £1.46 = $2.36 = $8.92 per US gallon

98 RON: €1.82 = £1.52 = $2.46 = $9.30 per US gallon

Diesel: €1.44 = £1.21 = $1.94 = $7.33 per US gallon

The real killer here is the VED (road tax). My XC90 D5 is just under €2,500 per year ($3,375) per year to tax for use on the road.

Insurance is close to €1,400 per year too. So thats near enough €4,000 per year ($5,400) before I even drive it!

Imagine that in the USA - there would be riots!
