Default HU850 -one speaker is 'weak'. Can I fix it?

Noticed that my FL speaker sounds significantly weaker (quieter) then my FR speaker.

Its almost like the amp is only working on one side.

Is there any way I can test the amp to see if both left and right are working?

Had a good wiggle of the connectors to check they are all OK.

Have you tried setting it to non-dolby (2ch or "OFF") mode then used the fader/balance control to individually select the front left and front right speakers? If so, how did that go?

connect another speaker of the same ohm rating in its place?

you can also quickly and easily test a speaker using a 1.5v battery.. just connect it to the speaker and disconnect it repeatedly. You should be able to hear a pop sound if the speaker is working. I'd whip the radio out of the dash and put the battery on the relevant wires for FL and FR and see if one sounds weaker. You might find that the speaker surround or cone has disintegrated on one side - the speaker still works but gives a diminished sound

Is it doing it on the CD player or the radio, or both ?

Check the wiring at the door hinge has not weakened. There is a rubber conduit which you can move about while playing some music and see if the volume changes. If you have an ohmeter, check the impedance of each speaker from the connector at the radio for any other wiring issues before condemning the speakers. You could also, with the power off, short the speaker terminals out and check the resistance down the wiring to eliminate the speaker impedance differences.

Make sure your balance/fader controls are set up correctly.

Speaker may need changing.

You will need to take off the trim panel.

Gently press the speaker cone in and out equally from the centre, if you can feel a scratching/grinding the cone has gone off centre and the windings are rubbing on the magnet.

If you do need to change the speaker, take your time and drill the old rivets out slowly and gently, don't go at it like a bull at a gate or everything will just get hot and you will melt the speaker mountings and the rivets will simply spin.

Make sure you don't let the old rivets fall inside the door, they may be the cause of a later rattle.

You should be able to get an economical replacement on e-bay, check for the correct part number.

I have changed two speakers in different cars for the above reason.
