Indeed, so I wonder what benefit is derived by the auto lowering of the mirrors ?

To reduce the risk of kerbing ?

True. But only useful when you are parallel parking, which accounts for a fraction of all reversing manoeuvres. In all other reversing situations - reversing out of a drive or parking space, for example - you may as well not have a nearside wing mirror as its pointing in the wrong direction.

You can also activate the 'dip' of the mirror by pressing the L or R button (respectively) when reverse is engaged. It still dips too far, though. Theoretically this is useful if you only sometimes park alongside a kerb and therefore have the auto-dip turned off.

& here's me thinking the auto dipping works really well for parallel parking!

Pretty sure the menus let you turn that off if you don't like it.

& as Roland says:

Activate, or deactivate: I find it really useful!

On balance, I think this is the best option as in reversing circumstances other than parallel parking, the total loss of nearside vision (except for the view of the rear wheel) is very annoying, if not downright dangerous.

(Presumably, when self-parking cars become the norm, there will be no need for auto-tilting wing mirrors at all!?)

Awesome, I never knew that.

As Xceed says, this would be the best option for me too; plus you can do either side depending on which side the kerb is.

I love forums.

Thanks Roland.
