Ripped Off?

I'd say you've been ripped off if:
- The garage has dishonestly identified and undertaken work which wasn't necessary
- Quoted to replace with a particular quality of parts then actually fitted inferior parts to save money
- Inflated the number of hours labour undertaken to inflate the price

However, in this case it sounds like you either accepted their quote (or didn't even ask for one) in which case I can't see how you were ripped off - they might charge £100 per hour for labour plus VAT, which is entirely their right and hardly a rip off if you chose not to enquire the rate before comissioning the work!

This garage was recommended to me on the grounds of honest, sensibly priced work.
£100 per hour labour rate around these shores of non specialist, general garages would simply be suicidal for any business.

I did not ask for any quotation before hand because the diagnostics had to be made BEFORE. I did, however, ask to be contacted with any findings and any proposed repairs before the work was carried out. This wasn't done.

Had I known it was the rear oxigen sensor I would have asked for a different brand/Volvo part as the outgoing NGK thing had been fitted 3 years ago and therefore didn't last as mentioned in an earlier reply.

Yes. I do agree. That really is the only way but I do not have the time and now that I stay in a flat (my wife successfully discharged me back to the community) not even the space to do the work. Finding a place that understands cars can work beyond 5-6 years old is proving difficult. Hence me trying this new to me place.

Yep they are getting harder and harder they are out there, the snap on tool van guy is a good source of info in regards to small trustworthy garages.

and they couldn't care less.

I asked a claimed Volvo specialist garage to diagnose my car
He claimed the issue, "Could be this or it could be that or it could be something else"
and then when he told me the issue was related to an electronic box and I asked where it was, gesticulating with his arms like a witch casting a spell, "It could be here it could be there it could be anywhere" and then gave me a card for someone he said could fix it.

At the hospital yesterday I asked the doctor about a particular procedure and the possible reason for varying outcomes he said that he didn't know because he wasn't there.

I ask the next door hired lawn mower bloke to blow his waste away from my place because there is a cross street in that direction and no houses there so his waste doesn't end up in my garage or anyone elses
He tells me it is the wind and that if I have a problem I should call the police.
He has obviously never opened his mouth in a pub or had the **** kicked out of him

They are all ****ing mental

A territory uncomfortably close to home.
