Default cambelt

Hi

Had new cambelt and all tensioners, waterpump changed by Volvo garage. There is now a slight whine when I rev the engine which gets worse as you rev. I took the car back to the garage and they said the engine sounded normal and that the whine would be around until the new stuff bedded in. They said it could not be a overly tight belt as the tensioner is automatic. Should I be worried or just believe them.

some feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers

Ken

The auxiliary belt is automatically tensioned but the timing tensioner needs to be set correctly.

If you click on the link in my signature and scroll down, there's my D5 timing belt video.
Right at the end of the video is my engine running with a newly installed timing kit.
It doesn't whine.

What's your mileage and is your alternator pulley original?

Hi

Many thanks for reply. Some great vids there! The alternator was replaced when I bought the car by the selling garage. I asked for all items and belts including waterpump to be done by the Volvo garage. There does not seem to be any whine at idle. But as you rev the engine it becomes more apparent and is slightly more noisy when very hot. I am not very up on diesel engines so their noises are a mystery. Mileage is 63,000

Thanks Ken

Thanks.

It would be interesting to know if the replacement alternator came with a new pulley or they transferred your old one.
If it had a new pulley, was it a clutch type?

Does the auxiliary belt run smoothly like a sewing machine through the rev range?

Make sure the aircon clutch pulley is also ok. They have a habit of failing on these also. Did they fit a new stretch belt?

You might find the cover is not quite fitted properly and is rubbing on a pulley inside . Try pressing the cover when the engine is running and see if you can alter the noise tone...
