I've had the car back for two days now, in which time I've covered a couple of hundred miles.

The result - not a perfect fix but very signifcantly improved, certainly to a level that I can live with. I now only get the whine/whistle in a very narrow range of speeds (20-25 MPH), and when it does occur, it is much quieter and lasts only for a few seconds, rather than being continuous as before.

Thanks Waynedance for the initial suggestion, "fixed" for a fraction of the price of the compressor replacement that the dealer suggested.

Glad to hear it has made an improvement, seems to be a very common problem with Volvo's.

Sorry for the dumb question, but now that you appear to have found a fix, what exactly was the problem in the first place ?
