Default Info. re front lower suspension control arm.

2010my, XC70, D5. 116,000 miles.
Shudder through brake pedal and steering wheel when braking. Inspection by local MOT guy. States no discernible play on joints/bushes but rubber boot on right side suspension lower control arm is displaced. (not located on bottom edge) I believe that this model XC70 has the ball joint mounted within the control arm which means replacing that arm, which may also cure the vibration problem as this is may be being caused by a worn bush. I believe that there are two different ball joint sizes on these control arms,( 21mm and 18 mm ) and presumably different part numbers.
How do I ascertain which is fitted to our car before dismantling ?

I was taught that vibration when braking felt through steering wheel was due to warped front discs and via the footbrake pedal was rear disc being warped.
Just my 2d
Cheers
Bob.

Thanks Bob. That sounds feasible. I’m planning to check/replace the brake pads soon. Usually check the disc for scale and thickness at same time. Will check for run out as well.

If the wish bones are the same as the V70 you can replace the ball joint, by drilling the rivets that hold the original in.

I had to change mine when changing a front wheel bearing.

But is the ball joint available seperately?
Many moons ago I had a Morris Marina. (underated car which I had for many years and 100,000 miles.). On one occasion, whilst servicing brakes prior to MOT, I noticed a track rod end rubber boot split. I had some scrap track rod ends with perfectly good boots in the scrap bin so popped the track rod end off the steering arm, replaced split boot with a good boot from scrap and re-assembled. Boot was still good when the track rod end eventually wore out.
I wonder, if the offending boot is in good nick but the lower edge has simply become dislodged, is it possible to relocate it and replace the securing clip or spring with a suitably sized cable tie. Just a thought for when I have the wheel off.

Yes, you can buy it separately. It bolts in place where the original is riveted into the arm.

I don't think Volvo will sell it seperately but its worth checking. There are many suppliers of aftermarket bottom ball joint. A decent car parts factor will be able to supply a replacement. The replacement part bolts into place the old one will have to have the rivets chiseled or ground off to remove it. Lower wishbones with new joints and bushes already fitted are available for not much money £50 to 60 a side and probably easier to fit ; plus the added bonus of new inner bushes .
